My Top 50 Favourite Playstation 1 Games: #6

#6 - Crash Team Racing
Released: 1999
Genre: Racing
Rating: ****1/2 stars
Best Moment: Oh man, choosing one moment... so tough! Probably nailing the power sliding turbo boosts the full maximum of three times, it's a difficult but fun art to master and it makes a huge difference to your racing.
I think I may have said this before, but again I'll say it, I do think this is better than any Mario Kart game. It's probably because I was a Sony Playstation kid growing up and not a Nintendo kid, but I clocked so many hours on this game it was unbelievable. The one negative thing about this game is simply, that there's not as much access to 4 player racing, unless you bought the multitap, something that was a lot easier on the Nintendo 64 and the Nintendo Wii with their setups. But when it comes to single player mode, I truly believe this game is the king of kart racers.

What I love about Crash Team Racing is the single player mode, where you drive to each destination and race for the trophy, CTR tokens and relics, and each area of the map has its own boss. I just think this layout is really cool and each individual track in Crash Team Racing is very different from the last. Sure, you could argue, that some the tracks in CTR are heavily influenced from Mario Kart, and I'd agree with that statement. But I just love the slickness of the racing, I love the differences in abilities within each character, and, of course, I love the Crash Bandicoot flavour of a kart racing game. Lots of people are asking for this game to be remastered, and I agree, I'd love nothing more than to see it re-done, but right now I hope that Activision concentrate on making a brand new Crash Bandicoot game, rather than rely on this which probably would make them a lot of money - just keep the fans waiting a little longer!

My Top 50 Favourite Playstation 1 Games: #40

#40 - Lego Racers
Released: 1999
Genre: Racing
Rating: ***3/4 stars
Best Moment: Unlocking better parts to customise your ultimate Lego Racer car!
Can I just say, on the whole, as a kid, I wasn't a Lego person. I don't know why. For a period of time I did like Mega Blocks, but I just wasn't that into Lego. Perhaps it's because the pieces are so damn small. Maybe I wasn't creative enough.

But, I did get Lego Racers. I played a demo of it and thought it was actually a decent racing game. And then I bought the game. I just loved the idea of building my own Lego car and racing it. And as a whole, the game is actually decent. Sure it's not on the level of Mario Kart or even other similar games, but they did a decent job of this racing game. They released a sequel on the Playstation 2 and never made another Lego Racer game, which I found strange.

Nowadays Lego games are a completely new thing with Lego Dimensions, and the game is doing pretty well. Lego movies are also doing well too. Perhaps with the newfound success they can create an even better Lego Racer game? I'd consider playing it, my kids would love it!

My Top 50 Favourite Playstation 1 Games: #41

#41 - Crash Bash
Released: 2000
Genre: Party
Rating: ***3/4 stars
Best Moment: Definitely better as a multiplayer game, the first few levels are quite fun.
Crash Bash could have been great. It's a shame it wasn't. Why? Basically, it runs out of steam too quickly.

This was the first Crash Bandicoot game that was done after Naughty Dog sold the game series. And it was a wise decision to work with a party game format, replicating the format that Mario had set. Super Mario Bros and Crash Bandicoot? Yup. Mario Kart and Crash Team Racing? Sorted. Mario Party and Crash Bash? Sure. But this game pales in comparison.

When I say it runs out of steam too quickly, it's for a couple of reasons. Firstly, the game's story game layout is the same as the original Crash Bandicoot games, in the respect that to play new levels/party games you have to beat previous levels/party games. But what makes a party game fun is being able to play a variety of levels off the bat straight away, not being forced into playing what's in front of you in a linear format. And the second reason it runs out of steam too quickly is because the latter levels are poor compared to the first few levels. The first few levels of the game are actually lots of fun. But the last ones are difficult, frustrating and simply, not fun. And a party game needs to be fun. So, this game is simply not up to scratch, which is a shame, because I'd love to see Activision give the Crash Bandicoot party game experience another, erm, bash, because I do think it could be successful if they learn the lessons of Crash Bash.
