My Top 50 Favourite Resident Evil Moments: #30 to #21

Welcome to Part 3 of 5 in what is my Top 50 Favourite Resident Evil Moments. We're halfway there. If you missed from #40 to #31 then click here, and to view #50 to #41 click here.

Let's go!

#30 - Ada's Return - Resident Evil 4

Ada was seen at a glance much earlier in the game when she helps you out against "The Big Cheese" in Chapter 1-3, but this is actually an optional scene. Her official return is at the end of Chapter 3-2 in the Castle when she gets into a close enter with Leon. It's a great scene, considering that the last time that Ada and Leon really saw each other was towards the end of Resident Evil 2 when Ada seemingly dies, to Leon's distress. It's great seeing them back together, and throughout the whole game in fact, as Leon knows that Ada can't be trusted and Ada knows that Leon is a very commendable ally/foe. The tension between the two in this game is tremendous and it's a shame that it doesn't really go much further in Resident Evil 6.

#29 - Meeting Lisa Trevor - Resident Evil Remake

Aw crap. Lisa Trevor is terrifying. She was a very welcome addition to Resi 1 Remake, as she was never present in the original game. Hearing her ghastly moans before meeting her is a great moment too, but when she greets you by knocking her out with her chains and letting you rest at the side of her fireplace... it's an interesting and incredibly memorable introduction. What's even better is her backstory. It's so tragic, and I could go into detail about it but I'd rather not, there's plenty of analysis out there if you're interested! She's also invicible, you can never kill her no matter how hard you try. She's just a brilliant video game monster and a great addition to the Remake. She is also featured in my Top 50 Favourite Video Game Villains list, getting to #38.

#28 - Wesker vs Jill and Chris - Resident Evil 5
I'm not talking about the encounter in the actual game but rather the flashback sequence shown in Chapter 3-1, when Sheva asks Chris about Albert Wesker. At this point of the game you suspect that Jill has been killed, with her sacrificing herself to deal with Wesker. What I love about this whole scene is how badass Wesker is. He's one of my all time video game villains, if not my actual favourite. When he uses his superspeed and strength to take out both Chris and Jill, it's just an awesome watch. I also love the scene when he murders Oswell Spencer too. As much as Resi 5 overall is one of the weaker entries in the series, the majority of what they did with Wesker was tremendous.

#27 - The Return to the Police Station - Resident Evil 3 Nemesis

The funny thing about me doing this list at this time is that Resident Evil 3 Remake is literally around the corner... and this only one of two entries in this list from the original game. Why? It's not to say that Resi 3 was bad - far from it. I love Resi 3. But, Nemesis as an entity aside, they didn't really do a lot in Resi 3 that was done before with Resi 1 and 2. It's a very good game but I just don't find much of it memorable.

But one thing that was certainly memorable was going back to the police station. It's just so cool. Resident Evil 2's police station is simply one of the most iconic places in video game history, certainly in the Resident Evil game series. So when you get the opportunity to revisit the place in Resi 3 it immediately brought a smile to my face. And you use it as a safe haven to get away from Nemesis and it works... or does it? Of course not!

It'll be interesting to see how much of the police station we'll be able to access in Resi 3 Remake, comparatively with Resi 2 Remake, not long until we find out!

#26 - Reuniting with Mia - Resident Evil 7
Resident Evil 7 did so many things right, and was a true homage to the old school Resi games and horror in general. One of the best parts of the game are right at the beginning of the game. You're primary objective as Ethan is to find your wife, Mia Winters, and pretty much 20 minutes into the game you find her! Job done! Let's leave this horrible place and go home! End of game.

You just know that finding your wife so damn early into the game is NOT good news. It's gotta be bad. You expect her to turn into a monster or be a villain or something... but it doesn't happen... not straight away. It's fantastic tension building by Capcom because you just know it's gonna turn awry, and when it does it fucking DOES. The whole scene that follows is proper homage to The Evil Dead and it's great.

Well we're half way there. What are your thoughts so far? He's a recap from #50 to #26...

  • #26 - Reuniting with Mia (Resident Evil 7)
All caught up? Good. Let's start the second half of this list!

#25 - "...SHIT." - Resident Evil 4
Otherwise known as the beginning of the game. I concentrate on Leon swearing because I believe this was the first time I had heard bad language in a Resident Evil game. Leon certainly uses the word a lot in Resi 4 and I love hearing it. But in seriousness, the beginning of Resi 4 is great. We'd NEVER seen anything like this before in the Resident Evil series, when we encounter our first of the Ganados. They can talk, they can carry weapons, they can run. It was an amazing moment and one of the most memorable parts in the series.

#24 - The Intro - Resident Evil
No matter what your opinion is on the Intro for the original Resident Evil game you can't deny how memorable it is. Time hasn't been kind to the original game and its original intro is certainly up there with the arguably cringiest parts of the game. But if you did play this back in 1996 or certainly in the late nineties, it wasn't that bad at all. I'd NEVER seen a horror game before Resident Evil, and parts of this intro did scare me. I love the hand being pulled from the ground, without the body, I love the full cut version of the intro too, with the dogs, it's very well done in parts. Sure the acting is awful, but I still love everything about this intro. And, if you haven't seen it before, watch this amazing parody done by Legendary Frog, it's amazing!

#23 - Meeting Nosferatu - Resident Evil Code Veronica
Nosferatu is a truly underrated Resi monster. It's a shame he wasn't used more because he's only in the game for, perhaps an hour at best, and you only face him once. He's actually quite important to the plot too, being the father of Alfred and Alexia Ashford. Facing him as a boss is incredibly memorable, because he's actually very difficult to defeat. You can only really attack him with either the knife or the rifle, and if you get too close he knocks you back, possibly off the platform, killing you instantly.

But before you face him as a boss, you meet him earlier and this is the scene for me that's the more memorable moment. You go into a safe room, with safe room music, and everything is hunkydory, before all of a sudden the music goes dead when you see a hidden passage behind a locker. You go through and see this metal grated floor section, and underneath is Nosferatu, chained and gagged, making the most ungodly scream ever. It's just a moment that catches you WAY off guard, because safe rooms are supposed to be safe, dammit!

#22 - Cerberus Teasing to Smash Through the Window - Resident Evil Remake
When Capcom were working on the Resident Evil remake, they wanted to create a game that would be great for people who had played the original and for those who hadn't. One of the very memorable moments in the original game was the corridor east on the first floor, when the dogs, which are called Cerberus, smash through the window and attack the player. Capcom knew that this area was truly memorable, so what did they do for the remake?

They teased the dog coming through the window, but it didn't break. It was a stroke of genius. Original fans were dreading going through this corridor, knowing how it all goes down in the first game, and when the dog teases to smash the window it's like, "oh, okay, well I wasn't expecting that!" And what's better? Is that there seems to be a random generator in terms of IF or HOW the dogs smash through the window in this area! You could go through this corridor three, four, five, six times, and the dogs will leave you alone, but they do spontaneously go through eventually! Capcom worked the original fans a treat with how they worked this section of the game, fair play!

#21 - Discovering the B Campaign - Resident Evil 2
Sometimes the best moments aren't necessarily in the actual game, but can be the game itself. Back in 1998, when Resident Evil 2 came out, it was quite a novel idea, seeing that you had two discs to play the game, one for each character. Disc 1 was the story of Leon Kennedy, where as Disc 2 was the story of Claire Redfield. Both campaigns and stories were different and equally great.

But when you finish one of the campaigns and see the words "Scenario 2nd" come up, with the opposite character to who you beat the game with, no one was expecting that. And it opened up two whole new chapters of the game!

If you're not familiar, Resi 2 has Leon and Claire's stories. Let's call them Leon A and Claire A. If you beat the game with Leon A, you unlock Claire B, and vice versa, you unlock Leon B when you beat the game on Claire A. There are differences between the four campaigns too!

My Top 50 Favourite Resident Evil Moments: #40 to #31

Welcome to Part 2 of 5 in what is my Top 50 Favourite Resident Evil Moments. If you missed from #50 to #41 then click hereLet's get straight to it!

#40 - Meeting El Gigante - Resident Evil 4

El Gigante may be based on the Cave Troll from Lord of the Rings but that takes nothing away from the fact that this boss from Resi 4 is excellent. He's intimidating, especially further along in the game when you go against two of them, but he's also a very fun boss to go against. Shooting at his head, dodging his massive fists, then running away before he throws trees at you - it's insane and entertaining. The boss fight was so popular that they made it a boss fight in Resi 5 as well!

#39 - Ada's Trap - Resident Evil 6
As stated earlier, Resi 6 was the weakest entry in the main series and by a considerable margin. So much so that this is the third and final entry into this Top 50 involving the game. For me, this was a huge moment in an otherwise poor game. Ada Wong has always played nicely on that line between good and evil, both in Resi 2 and in Resi 4. So when we saw she was playing a big part in Resi 6 we expected a similar performance.

That was until she throw an bomb of viruses at all of Chris Redfield's men, turning them into gooey monsters. It was the first time we really saw her doing something truly evil, rather than it being something mischievous or debatable because she was following orders. I've always been a huge Ada fan and I was like "noooo!" when this happened.

Of course, later on we learn that it wasn't Ada but someone called Carla Radames, who was impersonating Ada and, basically, was an Ada clone, but it takes nothing away from this moment at the time and how you felt about it.

#38 - Meeting Yawn - Resident Evil
Ah, Resident Evil's first ever boss. Yawn was, and still is, a bastard. I've played Resi 1 countless times and Yawn still gives me a small amount of anxiety whenever I face him. Is he scary? Not really, not beyond the first time you face him anyway. But he is dangerous. All it takes is one bite from him and that's it, you're poisoned. Depending on who you play as in Jill or Chris and what actions you have taken to that point, getting poisoned by Yawn can make life difficult for you. It's best to avoid getting bit but that's a major task. Avoiding him on the way in isn't too bad. But when you try and collect the Moon Crest and escape he basically traps you in his little corner. So Yawn, despite all of the times I've faced him, is a pain in the ass and I think my escape percentage without getting poisoned is probably around 10%. He's a very memorable boss, being the first one in the series I'm sure everyone agrees.

#37 - Crimson Heads - Resident Evil Remake
I remember that I didn't play the Remake of Resident Evil 1 for, I dunno, maybe a year after it came out? I didn't have a Gamecube when it was released so hearing of the REmake got me excited but I was also gutted I'd not get to play it for a while. But I remember one of my good friends telling me about Crimson Heads, and how they're regular zombies that come back from the dead... again... and they're much more dangerous. When I eventually played the REmake they met my expectations. I mostly run away from them, because they run so damn fast and can cripple your health if you're not careful. Of course you can take care of them with a lighter and some fuel but there's not much of that around. They're pretty terrifying for sure!

#36 - Tyrant vs Birkin - Resident Evil 2 Remake

I touched on this in my Resident Evil 2 Remake article (which you can read by clicking here), but this was the fight we never asked for, but oh boy are we happy we saw it! Something some fans may or may not have thought while playing the original game is, what would happen if William Birking fought Tyrant? Well, we got the answer in the Remake, and it wasn't even close. William Birkin rips Tyrant's chest out in one piece and it looks insane. I LOVED this moment from Resi 2 Remake. I never asked for it but I'm happy we saw it!

#35 - The Gallery Room - Resident Evil
This moment brings me WAY back to when I first played Resi 1. On the surface, this room and this scenario isn't scary or anything special, so if you disagree with this entry I understand. But don't forget, this is my personal list! The crows in Resi 1 were pretty scary at the time. One crow you can deal with, but when around 3, 4 or 5 of them come at you, they can create havoc and really cause damage.

And then you have The Gallery Room. Which is FULL of crows. If you shoot at them, they'll come at you. If you get the puzzle in the room wrong they will come at you. Get it right and they'll leave you alone. But when I first went into this room, way back when I first played this game, I didn't know any of this. All I saw was a room full of crows. And walking through it, trying not to disturb these damn birds... I crapped myself! So it's a nostalgia moment for me, talking about how I felt going into this room for the first time, hence its inclusion in this list.

#34 - The First Tape - Resident Evil 7
If you've played the demo of Resident Evil 7 then you'll be also familiar with "the first tape", because it's basically the same thing. A team of ghost hunters enter the Baker house because of rumours of it being haunted and they get killed off. That's what happens in a nutshell. But playing the RE7 demo, or playing through the "tape" in the game really sets up the game very well. It's creepy and cheesy at the same, and it's all about what happens in the end of the tape, when we see one of the guys get killed off, with blood streaming from their eyeballs and mouth. It's brutal and it's classic Baker family shit. I love it.

#33 - Entering the Village - Resident Evil 4
Entering the village in Resi 4 is simply one of the best and most memorable moments in Resi history. No matter how much Resi you've played, if you've played Resi 4 in the first time and you get to the village, nothing prepares you for what's about to come. Arriving in that village, seeing all the locals, it's "backwards Hillbilly murdering village" vibes all over. And seeing all of them, coming at you, is just INSANE. In previous Resi games, you can have what, three or four zombies take you on at once? How many people are in that screenshot? And there's more in other parts of this area too!

And then you have the Chainsaw guy. Run into one of the houses and a cutscene plays out where you hear and see all the villagers surround the house. Then you hear the revs of a chainsaw. Then his lunatic runs at you! It's just madness and I love it.

#32 - Meeting Mimicry Marcus - Resident Evil 0
Resi 0 overall doesn't do that much to further what happens in the games that were released before it, but the addition of leeches was, erm, interesting. And Mimicry Marcus enemies are just disgusting. They're a pain in the butt to deal with and follow you everywhere. When you meet the first one in the train it's a fantastic visual and it's pretty much the best scene in the entire game.

#31 - The First Zombie - Resident Evil 2 Remake
When they announced that they were remaking Resi 2 I was excited. Then there was radio silence for years. Then at E3 2018 they showed the trailer and they showed the first zombie killing a police officer. And it was absolutely GRUESOME. Just look at the level of detail in the GIF below. It's insane. I've never seen such detail in a game before, when it comes to this level of gore. We've come so far since the days of 1996 when we saw our first ever zombie. Seeing the first zombie in 2019 in RE2 Remake shows just how far. I love the level of detail. It's sick and I love it.

My Top 50 Favourite Resident Evil Moments: #50 to #41

Ahoy there and welcome to another one of my listings. With the dust settled on Resident Evil 2 Remake and Resident Evil 3 Remake announced and less than a week away I thought now would be a good time to reveal what my 50 favourite moments are in the series. When I say the series I'm talking about the main games, so I'm not including Resident Evil Survivor, Revelations or Umbrella Chronicles or similar. It's literally Resident Evil 0, 1, 2, 3, Code Veronica, 4, 5, 6, 7, 1 Remake and 2 Remake.

Some of these moments are scary, some are funny, some are sad and some are just iconic.

I'll post these 50 moments across 5 parts over 5 days. Today I'm posting #50 to #41, so come back tomorrow for #40 to #31.

Because some people prefer videos, some prefer text, some prefer GIFs and some want just a picture - I tried to get one of everything in here for each entry.. although some seem to have disappeared due to copyright issues perhaps. Some explanations may be longer than others. And don't forget - all of this is my opinion, so if you disagree, that's cool, we can discuss that in the comments.

I shouldn't have to say but just in case - there are likely to be SPOILERS in these posts. So if you've not played any of the games above and don't want to know what happens, don't take the risk!

Enjoy my favourite moments from *FLASH*
Resident. Evil.

#50 - The Mysterious White Bag - Resident Evil 4
Right at the end of Resident Evil 4 - and we mean one of the last rooms you enter in the entire game has the last Regenerator enemy to defeat in there. Before that though you can open a cupboard to find a white bag inside. It takes a good couple of seconds, but after a moment, the bag starts moving. And moving. And it won't stop unless to strike or shoot it with a weapon, and when you do it stretches in a weird way and flops dead.

Why?

What was it?

The answer remains a mystery to this day. It has no impact to the game in any way, shape or form and you don't even have to open the cupboard. It's just a weird moment and it's simplicity is great.

#49 - Piers Nivans' Sacrifice - Resident Evil 6
Let's get something out of the way - Resi 6 is by far the worst entry in the series. But that doesn't mean it doesn't have its moments. And when I say moments I do literally mean... moments. Most of it is just meh. And again, my opinion here, one redeeming thing about Resi 6 is actually Chris Redfield. I've never been the biggest Chris fan, and his character in Resi 5 was really crap in honesty. But in Resi 6 he does somehow redeem himself. Acting like the elderly statesman to a group of young BSAA rookies, he is the role model for the likes of Finn and Piers. More on Finn later.

But Piers is the shining light of the BSAA. He's young, quite brash, but quickly becomes an incredibly reliable soldier working alongside Chris and is there when the shit hits the fan. He's the future. But then he gets attacked and infected by a monster named Haos. He still helps Chris defeat the monster and Chris says they'll escape.

But Piers has other ideas. He throws Chris into the escape pod and locks the door. Chris begs him to open the door but Piers refuses.

It's a heartbreaking moment in the game, one that caught me by surprise. Mainly because everything leading up to this point in Chris' story was mostly boring, apart from other scenes which we'll get to later. Chris was supposed to retire after training up these young rookies in Finn and Piers. But he outlives them and continues to fight on in their memory.

#48 - Lurker Frogs - Resident Evil 0
Resident Evil 0 isn't a bad game, not at all. It's decent enough. Most of the general enemies in the game are dull... apart from Lurker Frogs. These massive frogs don't look that intimidating and that's part of the beauty of the situation. By this point in the series, most fans had played Resi 1, Resi 2, Resi 3, Code Veronica and Resi 1 Remake. We had seen countless enemies in that time.

We get towards the end of Resi 0 and see a big frog jump out of the water. We take a look at it and almost laugh. They look like shit versions of Hunters.

But then they attack you with their massive tongue and drag you towards them... and eat you whole. That's it. Game Over.

What just happened??

Did that really just happen??

It really comes out of nowhere, and it's a one-hit kill. The only way out of it is if you have both Rebecca and Billy, and one shoots the Lurker Frog before the other gets eaten. But chances are the first few times you encounter these frogs you're separated, so until you reunite you literally have to either be quick and kill them before they attack you, or run and run FAST. Because their tongues are really long and once they attack, you're fucked.

#47 - The Master of Unlocking - Resident Evil
Some fans may say I'm placing this too low in the list and I understand if you're one of those people. It's a classic moment but there was so much to cover in this Top 50 it just kept getting bumped downwards. It's still an amazing moment though.

If you don't know, the original Resident Evil had some TERRIBLE acting. I mean just woeful. And most of the worst lines were by Barry Burton. I mean, personally, when I say the acting is terrible, I LOVE it. I love how cheesy the lines are. I love the poor dialogue. And Barry's lines are absolute corkers.

"Jill, here's a lockpick. It might be handy if you, the master of unlocking, take it with you."

I mean, sure. Maybe Jill is AMAZING at unlocking doors. If Jill was in Skyrim, perhaps her Pickpocket Level is 100. But to call her "The Master of Unlocking" is just a strange phrase to use. ESPECIALLY in a situation where you're stuck in a mansion full of zombies and other monstrosities. It's simply a classic Resident Evil moment and I love it.

#46 - Eveline's True Identity - Resident Evil 7
I did warn you about spoilers! Don't want to know the true identity of Eveline? Skip ahead. I mean it. The video thumbnail for the YouTube video shows you who it is! You get this warning for free.

You don't mind knowing who Eveline is? Or know already? Okay. Fine. So yeah. I'm not going to lie to you, when you find out that Eveline is actually the old lady in the wheelchair it did catch me by surprise. Is it the biggest plot twist in video game history? No. But it's still fun and I didn't see it coming. All this time, seeing that creepy old lady, doing nothing, singing in corridors, staring at you like a Mona Lisa painting, barely surviving, never dying, just... being... there. And of course, there's that one particular corridor where she's not facing you and you think this is the moment - she's gonna grab you, but she doesn't. Then when you turn around she's disappeared.

Eveline's plot twist wasn't expected and it's not the most original reveal but I did really enjoy it regardless.

#45 - Playground Fun - Resident Evil 6
I missed this moment when I first played Resident Evil 6! I did go down the slide and that was comical. But I didn't actually ride the panda! It's one of those moments where you think... did that just happen?? But I'm glad it did. Resident Evil over the years has had moments where you do wonder if the games take themselves too seriously. But we have over the years had some hilarious moments in the game. So it was a refreshing change of pace to have Chris Redfield mess about in a playground despite bioterrorism threatening to destroy the world. It's hilarious!

#44 - G-Adult - Resident Evil 2 Remake
Resident Evil 2 Remake was brilliant. Truly brilliant. What they kept the same was mostly the right decision and what they changed was usually for the better. There were some things I didn't agree with and to read my thoughts on that click here.

But one thing that was a stroke of genius was what they did with G-Adult.

In the original Resi 2, G-Adult was the first boss in the game. There was only one, and it was the creature that burst out of Ben or Chief Irons, depending on if you were playing as Leon or Claire respectively in the A Campaign. It's the offspring of William Birkin's monster who is trying to find the correct host.

So by that logic, there shouldn't be one G-Adult, but many. William Birkin creeps all the way from the labs underground to the sewers and then to the police station. So it makes a lot of sense to suggest that there can't be just one G-Adult, because William Birkin must have planted many embryos in many poor victims on his way up.

So Capcom realised this and made the decision in the Remake to scrap the G-Adult boss and instead make him a regular enemy. And what an enemy he is. He's an absolute grotesque bag of gore, eyes, flesh and poison. It's fucking revolting. And defeating them are an absolute pain in the ass. So bravo Capcom, for making a great change from the original game to the Remake in making G-Adult far more significant in the latter.

#43 - Wesker vs Chris - Resident Evil Code Veronica
When I first played Resident Evil Code Veronica I was so happy with the return of Wesker. I'll talk more about that in a later entry in this list. But one of the best things about the return of Wesker was the rivalry between Wesker and Chris. They hate each other, and for very good reason. Wesker betrayed the STARS team and Chris thwarted Wesker's plans back in the mansion in Resi 1, leaving him for dead.

And in the end of Code Veronica, we get to see what we really wanted - a fight between Wesker and Chris. And sure, it's a little one sided with Wesker's superpowers, but Chris, as he always does, manages to use some tricks up his sleeve. It's one of my favourite moments in Code Veronica and for some unknown reason not many people give the scene the love I feel it deserves. I love this fight!

#42 - The First Zombie - Resident Evil
Again, this is another moment I can see a lot of fans questioning why I've placed this all the way down in #42. And as iconic as this moment truly is, it never did scare me much, even when I played the game as a kid in the late nineties. There were far more scary moments in Resident Evil 1 than this. But I can't deny it's status as one of video games truly iconic moments. It's likely to be in a Top 100 video game moments list of all time, if someone was to make such a list. It's truly video game royalty, when it comes to how big this moment was for so many people. It's just that as much as I like this moment, it just didn't move me as much as it seemed to for others.

Also, I never knew that Forest's head got decapitated. They seemed to edit that scene, depending on what version you played.

#41 - The Orphanage - Resident Evil 2 Remake
We return to the Remake of Resident Evil 2 with another "change" they made that wasn't in the original game. The whole orphanage segment of Claire's campaign is excellent. They added so much more to the story and relationship of Chief Irons and Sherry Birkin. And there are moments in the orphanage that are quite uncomfortable. Chief Irons is much more of a scumbag in this remake, and Sherry is far less annoying than she is in the original. Overall, those tweaks to those characters made this whole scene much more impactful than I ever anticipated. I didn't really care for either character in the original game, but my feelings for both characters were far more this time round. So, again, kudos Capcom, for making another great addition to the already good story of Resi 2.
