#50. “Fat Around the Heart" – King 810
Released: 3/7/14
Album: Memoirs of a Murderer

King 810 are a band that I discovered last year when I found out they were supporting Slipknot, who I was about to see live. In my opinion, they're the best new(ish) metal band around, as discussed on this site before, I believe metal as a genre is a dying art form but King 810 are really keeping it alive. King 810, I've promoted a few times before on this site but also on my radio shows, are a band from Flint, Michigan, which is known as the "murder capital" of the US. King 810 sing songs about life there, the struggle, the death and violence, and despite all that, their pride for their home. "Fat Around the Heart" is a song about these struggles, about life in Flint. The first verse says it all - "I grew up in the church on Sunday/Back again bury friends on Monday/They don't just die they are killed from the gun play or the heroin or a prison stay/It's a shame that we gotta live this way/Your nightmares ain't got nothin' on this place/So stay down stay away stay safe/Cuz you aren't built that way". "Fat Around the Heart" is a great song, lyrically and also as a metal track. If you like Slipknot, have not heard King 810 and want to get into some new music, definitely give this band a listen.

Here's the music video if you want to hear it!

My Top 100 Favourite Songs 2010-14 Edition: #56

#56. “Radioactive" – Imagine Dragons
Released: 29/10/12
Album: Night Visions

I think it's becoming quite clear that this song will be considered to be a "classic" song of this decade in the future. I can see this being looked upon as one of the biggest and best rock tracks, when we think of the legacy of music in this time frame. Of course, being at #56 suggests that I really like it, love it even, but I don't place it in the top echelons of that category.

What "Radioactive" does is create a really cool, funky, space and electronic dubstep inspired indie track with a very catchy chorus. I'd heard the song a lot before I really gave it a lot of my time, it became one of those songs that were part of the furniture, it was everywhere. But until you truly "listen" to the track, listen to the lyrics, listen to the lovely atmospheric music, absorb it all in and sing a long to that awesome chorus, you don't thoroughly appreciate the song. It's a damn fine indie track, and as I said, probably one of the biggest rock tracks this decade will produce.

Here's the music video if you want to hear it!

My Top 100 Favourite Songs 2010-14 Edition: #84

#84. “On Top of the World" – Imagine Dragons
Released: 18/3/13
Album: Night Visions

It's funny, because for a long time I actually didn't know this song was Imagine Dragons! I heard this song a lot, and it ended up being one of this lovely radio friendly songs that you liked to listen to but didn't actually invest time to discovering more about, or at least that's what it was like for me. And then, someone requested the song on one of my radio shows and I was just like "oh my god, it's that song!". And the rest is history.

"On Top of the World" is simply just one of the happiest, positive thinking, lovely songs of the decade so far. Especially considering it's an indie track, it's just such an uplifting song, hence why it's been used a lot in the media, like in FIFA, a Samsung Galaxy advert and the movie The Incredible Burt Wonderstone. It's just a cool track that's very fresh and... just lovely.

Here's the music video if you want to hear it!

The Mercyside 100 2014

Hi everyone, this is my first post in nearly eight months. For the last two years I've been calculating all my play counts on my personal media player, to see what songs I listen to the most. And then at the start of the year I reveal what 100 songs I've listened to the most. Last year I revealed The Mercyside 100 2013, which was done in seven parts in great detail on this website and as seven DJ shows on my Mixcloud account.

This year I did The Mercyside 100 2014. Instead of 7 parts, I decided to cut it to four parts. So each of the four parts revealed 25 different songs, in reverse order of how often I played them.

You can listen to these four DJ shows on the links below:

Part 1: #100 to #76
Part 2: #75 to #51
Part 3: #50 to #26
Part 4: #25 to #1

I'm not going to go into great detail on this website, like I did last year. But what I will do is reveal to you what the 100 songs were, in reverse order. So if you don't want to find out this way, listen to the shows linked above!

So, in reverse order, here are is The Mercyside 100 2014! These are 100 songs I played more than anything else last year.

So, what was the most played song of the year for me? Here it is...

#1: Snap Out of It - Arctic Monkeys ("AM", 2013)

So there we go! I hope you choose to listen to the shows because they are much better to listen to rather than just see them as words on a screen. Music is for the ears after all! But if not, I hope you find some interesting entries in here, and if so, check them out on Youtube if you would rather do it that way than to listen to the actual shows! If there's something on this list you've not heard before and you end up really liking, let me know, comment below! I'd be happy to have gotten you into a song or an artist you've not heard before!

"Blue text"
Just in case you haven't listened to the shows, the songs in "blue" were "Songs of the Month". Basically, those tracks where played more than any other track, on a particular month of 2014. Here's the list in order, with Youtube links attached:
