Okay so my favourite song over the Last Half Decade is…

#1 “The Hunter” by Slaves

If you know me well, chances are high you probably had an inkling that this would be #1 on my list. And you know what? I actually debated putting it lower in the list because of the fact that it was an obvious choice for me. But when it comes down to it, there is only one song that stands out to me as above and beyond anything else released over this five year period.

I absolutely love this song. I absolutely love this band. I’m so happy I got to see them last month, they were incredible. I love the riff, I love how the song builds up, the video is pretty cool too, it’s discretely catchy and it’s… just… so… cool. I’m not a massive punk rock fan but with Slaves making garage rock merge with punk (a formula done by other bands, I’m not saying they’re the first) they have something that does sound raw and passionate and it packs a massive punch. I do encourage anyone who likes British rock, or punk, or garage rock a listen to this band. Seriously they’re one of the coolest new bands out there, and this is their biggest hit to date, and, clearly in my opinion, the best too.

My Top 100 Favourite Songs 2010-14 Edition: #6

#6 “I Just Had Sex” by The Lonely Island and Akon

Just missing out on the Top 5 is the absolutely brilliant “I Just Had Sex” by The Lonely Island with Akon. The Lonely Island have released some of the funniest songs over the last 10 years, and have definitely got the crown for funniest group right now. Well, I say right now but they haven’t released an album for a few years now, unless you count the soundtrack to their movie Popstar.

 

This is possibly the best song of the lot though. I do change my mind about what my favourite Lonely Island song is but this is definitely up there very consistently. At one point I did play this a lot but now I try not to, and when it comes on you really enjoy singing along and it’s fresh again. It’s an anthem of sorts I’d say – celebrating sex! And it’s just so so funny. The video is absolutely hilarious too of course (it got to #58 in my all time favourite music videos list), and Akon does a brilliant job working with these three comedians, both in the song and on the video. His little smile is adorable; you can just tell he’s having such a blast working with these guys.

My Top 100 Favourite Songs 2010-14 Edition: #18

#18. "Jack Sparrow” – The Lonely Island and Michael Bolton

How the heck is this song 5 years old? I hate growing older, time moves WAY too fast. Anyway this song is just hilarious. Unfortunately it’s one of those songs that lose its impact as time goes on but I’m telling you, the first time I heard it, the first time I saw the video, I belly laughed so hard. Never in a million years would I thought Michael Bolton would not only do something so funny, but to completely steal the show away from three legitimately hilarious people in The Lonely Island takes some doing. A massive part of why this song is so good is the video. In fact, if I never saw the video I probably wouldn’t have liked it anywhere near as much as I do. There’s a reason why I placed it at #36 in my all-time favourite music videos. It’s just simply one of the funniest songs probably ever really in my eyes, I love it that much.

#78. “Go Kindergarten" – The Lonely Island (with Robyn)

Album: The Wack Album

The last album by The Lonely Island was a little disappointing. I don't know, if like a lot of comedy in general, if The Lonely Island is becoming a phase and are running out of ideas, or if it was just an underwhelming effort. There was some good stuff on there but it was not filled to the brim of excellent songs sketches and general comedy like the previous two albums.

But this is a fine track, and Robyn, in her weird and wonderful self really adds to the greatness of the track. The song just takes the piss out of dance floor music generally, where DJs make their crowds do random things (like "make some noise! scream like a hyena!!" ...maybe a bad example) by saying incredibly odd and silly things. The song itself musically is pretty damn good as well for a hip hop/RnB/dance track. The Lonely Island aren't just funny, they make good music too.

Fun Fact: To this day, no one knows what the secret message is in the video, Radiohead won't reveal anything!!

So it's all over now. Sorry if you're disappointed at all. Obviously I'm not. And I'm sure there are those who do agree that this is one of the best music videos of all time.

What can I say about this video? It's simple and incredibly effective. A man lies in the street for no reason at all and gets a lot of people concerned. Why is he lying on the floor? Why won't he say why? Why can't we touch him? That's the beauty of this video. It's using the power of psychology, the power of the unknown. We have no idea what the hidden message is in this video. Professionals have tried and failed to work it out. And twenty years later after this video comes out, the secret in the video is only known to Radiohead, presumably the director, and... that's about it? We'll never know.

If you haven't seen this video, please watch it. It's just such a simple yet crazy idea that riles me up big time. WHY IS HE ON THE FLOOR?! So yeah. This is my favourite music video of all time and I just love it. And hate it. But love it far more than hate it, for sure!

Fun Fact: The Lonely Island almost begged Michael Bolton to do the song and video, he refused initially due to the strong language, but has since said it's "was one of the highlights of my career and most memorable experiences of my life"!

This is the third and last video by The Lonely Island on my list, and it's the FOURTH and final video directed by Akiva Schaffer on the list too.

Honestly, if you like Michael Bolton and haven't heard of The Lonely Island, or are reluctant to give the song a go because of their "adult humour" and "strong language", seriously, don't be that way. This is seriously one of the funniest videos of all time. I'm not exaggerating. And it's all down to the man himself, Michael Bolton.

Sir Bolton almost deserves an Oscar for his performance here, he does that good a job. He manages to successfully act out four very different films, and does a damn good and hilarious account of them all. The main one of course is Jack Sparrow, which is the premise of the video that, as The Lonely Island put it, Michael Bolton is a "major cinephile". Seriously, just watch the damn video!!

Fun Fact: Even though it's not got any gore, violence, horror, swearing or drug use or anything visibly controversial, the video was banned before the watershed on certain channels because it was apparently too scary for children!

Ah yes. Firestarter. Such a great video. What's fascinating about this video is that they have done far more controversial videos than this... yet this one caused so much more controversy (probably "Smack My Bitch Up" being the only exception). Why? All it is, is Keith Flint, doing a promo video to the song with a mohican in an underground tunnel! But if you have seen the video, or if you watch it now, you will see why it caused some discomfort. Keith Flint is very intimidating in this video, bopping around like a lunatic, slapping his head constantly, getting in the "face" of the camera throughout. But it's just a brilliant video, despite very little actually happening.

Keith Flint has incredible presence and a certain scary aura about him, and frankly, you can't keep your eyes on him. You barely notice that there are other people in the video other than him, that's how much you're fixated with the man!
