Mixtape: Best of Non-Single Foo Fighters

Hi everyone, and welcome to another one of my Mixtapes. If you're not sure what a Mixtape is, here's an explanation...

A Mixtape is a playlist of a certain genre, band or era. The list is generally 80 minutes long, the same length of a blank CD, with further recommendations if some of the songs aren't to your taste. Remember kids, downloading is wrong!

As the world has moved on from CDs and we're in a digital age now, I also make the playlist on Spotify and YouTube where possible.

Celebrating 25 years of the Foo Fighters! In case you're wondering, this is a list of what I think are the best Foo Fighters songs - that have never been singles. I'm surprised that some of these songs aren't singles, especially as they are regularly played live or even have music videos in some cases. The final song of the list can be argued that it's Dave Grohl as a solo artist rather than the Foo Fighters as it was around the time when Nirvana broke up, but then, the whole first Foo Fighters album is also technically Dave as a solo artist when you think about it!

Without any further delay, here's the Best of Non-Single Foo Fighters! Next to the tracks are what album each song came out on. Where possible, I've also linked each track on YouTube.
  1. Still (In Your Honor)
  2. Make it Right (Concrete and Gold)
  3. Dear Rosemary (Wasting Light)
  4. See You (The Colour and the Shape)
  5. Stranger Things Have Happened (Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace)
  6. Wattershed (Foo Fighters)
  7. Free Me (In Your Honor)
  8. Disenchanted Lullaby (One by One)
  9. Enough Space (The Colour and the Shape)
  10. Gimme Stitches (There is Nothing Left to Lose)
  11. Subterranean (Sonic Highways)
  12. Band on the Run (Radio 1: Established 1967 Compilation)
  13. La Dee Da (Concrete and Gold)
  14. Weenie Beenie (Foo Fighters)
  15. Erase/Replace (Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace)
  16. The Colour and the Shape (Monkey Wrench B-Side)
  17. I Should Have Known (Wasting Light)
  18. Bad Reputation (Medium Rare EP)
  19. Hooker on the Street (Demo from 1994)
Some of these not to your taste? Here's five alternatives...
  1. Up in Arms (The Colour and the Shape)
  2. The Last Song (In Your Honor)
  3. In the Clear (Sonic Highways)
  4. Aurora (There is Nothing Left to Lose)
  5. Halo (One by One)
To listen to the playlist on Spotify click here! It's missing a couple of tracks unfortunately, but it's mostly there!

Mixtape: Best of Industrial Vol. 2

Hey everyone and welcome to another Mixtape! Two in two weeks, they're coming like buses! Over seven years ago I did my first "Best of Industrial" Mixtape. You can find that link here. At the time I was struggling to create that Mixtape, reason being that while I love the genre, there weren't that many bands that I knew and loved beyond the obvious. Choosing around 20 artists of this genre isn't easy, certainly those of good quality. Yet the sound in its pure form is just beautiful. It's hard to put into words.

Anyway, doing this Part 2, seven years later was so much easier. I can't again explain why either. Perhaps my palette has increased for the genre? But it was always there and I've always loved it. As I said it's hard to explain!

Not familiar with the term Industrial? I'll copy and past what I put down in my Volume 1 because I explained it relatively well then.

The roots of Industrial music started in the seventies and with the Industrial Records company, but they weren't really successful, nor was the sound. But it inspired the "Post-Industrial" genre, what we now know as Industrial music. So if you're an Industrial purist, you could say that the list below is not Industrial music, but Post-Industrial music. I will continue to consider this Mixtape and the songs and sound as Industrial music, but let's not be ignorant to the original genre of the seventies. There's so many influences that helped made the genre, and there are so many influences from Industrial music that helped shape music today.

So what have I defined as Industrial below? Well, after the seventies Industrial Records scene, Industrial (or Post-Industrial) roots back to the early eighties. Arguably the first Post-Industrial band was Skinny Puppy, but of course, there were bands that influenced Skinny Puppy to make the sound they made, and there were a few bands around that time that while aren't Industrial as a sole genre, they also helped to the rise. Bands like Killing Joke, Bauhaus, Ministry, KMFDM and Kraftwerk are all bands that in some way, shape or form, helped Industrial music to become what it has been in the eighties, nineties and naughties.

But, and you can argue I'm biased in saying this, but to me, the band that pioneered Industrial music is Nine Inch Nails. A lot of the 1980s Industrial lacked melody, it sounded great but it was repetitive and became almost brainless music. But Nine Inch Nails added melody, added quality vocals and also started using ground breaking electronic metal music to add to the machinery sound that was Industrial music. As I said, I could be biased, as Nine Inch Nails are my favourite band.

Not familiar with my Mixtapes? Here are the rules.

A Mixtape is a playlist of a certain genre, band or era. The list is generally 80 minutes long, the same length of a blank CD, with further recommendations if some of the songs aren't to your taste. Remember kids, downloading is wrong!

This list you'll see below isn't just Industrial music. It's a celebration of the sound, and the sounds that have been influenced by Industrial music. Industrial music has been used in so many genres since the boring machine sound of the eighties, it's used in dance music, techno, alternative rock, indie, metal and most recently, dubstep. You name the genre, chances are Industrial had an assist in there for making the genre what it is today. So there's a lot of bands here that aren't Industrial. But I've selected certain songs by those bands, that have roots from the Industrial genre, and have them showcase how good the sound can be when done perfectly. I have some eighties industrial, nineties industrial, some electronic dance music and some heavy industrial metal.

Enjoy my second homage to Industrial music!
  1. Mr Self Destruct - Nine Inch Nails
  2. Hooker With a Penis - Tool
  3. Death - Skinny Puppy
  4. Flesh is the Law - Genitorturers
  5. Shut Me Up - Mindless Self Indulgence
  6. More and Faster (243) - KMFDM
  7. Electric Head Pt 2 - White Zombie
  8. Hey Man, Nice Shot - Filter
  9. Do What I Say - Clawfinger
  10. QWERTY - Mushroomhead
  11. Rammstein - Rammstein
  12. My Wall (feat Excision and Downlink) - KoRn
  13. Bombshell - Powerman 5000
  14. Verta Ja Lihaa - Turmion Katilot
  15. BBB - How to Destroy Angels
  16. Angel With the Scabbed Wings - Marilyn Manson
  17. Just One Fix - Ministry
  18. Sucked In - Jerk
  19. Linchpin - Fear Factory
  20. Get to the Gone - Static-X
  21. Rock and Roll (In a Black Hole) - Rob Zombie
Don't like some of these? Give these five a try...
  1. Zerospace - Kidneythieves
  2. Guilty - Gravity Kills
  3. Fukken Uber Death Party - Hanzel und Gretel
  4. Eye - Smashing Pumpkins
  5. Golgotha Tenement Blues - Machines of Loving Grace
To listen to the playlist on YouTube click here!

So I hope you enjoy this list. As I said, some of these bands are not Industrial, but I hope you understand their inclusion in the list. They have roots from the genre, and like to implement it into their modern sounds.

Until next time, take care!

Mixtape: Best of Non-Single Rammstein

Hi everyone, and welcome to another one of my Mixtapes. If you're not sure what a Mixtape is, here's an explanation...

A Mixtape is a playlist of a certain genre, band or era. The list is generally 80 minutes long, the same length of a blank CD, with further recommendations if some of the songs aren't to your taste. Remember kids, downloading is wrong!

As the world has moved on from CDs and we're in a digital age now, I also make the playlist on Spotify and YouTube where possible. In this case, I can only do the Mixtape on Spotify because Rammstein are very protective over their copyrighting on YouTube.

So, just in case you're wondering, this is a list of what I think are Rammstein's best songs - that have never been singles. I'm surprised that some of these songs aren't singles, especially as they are regularly played live or even have music videos in some cases. And yes - this list does include their new album released only two days ago. And again, yes - you REALLY should listen to that new album. It's tremendous.

Without any further delay, here's the Best of Non-Single Rammstein! Next to the tracks are what album each song came out on. Where possible, I've also linked each track on YouTube.

Mixtape: Best Sega Mega Drive/Genesis Music

Hi everyone, and welcome to another one of my Mixtapes. In case you're not sure what a Mixtape is, here's an explanation...

A Mixtape is a playlist of a certain genre, band or era. The list is generally 80 minutes long, the same length of a blank CD, with further recommendations if some of the songs aren't to your taste. Remember kids, downloading is wrong!

The Sega Mega Drive (or Genesis if you're from the US) is one of my favourite consoles. It was the first console I ever had as my own, and it holds a very strong sentimental value. Some of the music from this 32-bit era was truly tremendous. It's amazing how much power the console had at the time, in terms of producing great tunes. The 64-bit era and beyond changed music in video games forever because they could play actual genuine music, but back when the Mega Drive was around that wasn't the case.

So I wanted to showcase my favourite songs from my favourite games from this era of video gaming. If you want to see an actual list of my 50 Favourite Mega Drive Games, simply click this link here. But as for the music, here's the playlist below, with links to each individual song!
  1. Title Theme - Street Fighter II Championship Edition
  2. The Desert - Aladdin
  3. Title Theme - Micro Machines 2
  4. Duckberg - Quackshot
  5. Opening Theme - Mortal Kombat
  6. Mars 1 and 2 - Taz: Escape from Mars
  7. Main Theme - Micro Machines
  8. Area 1: Jammin' Jungle - Mega Bomberman
  9. Forest and Mountain - Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle
  10. Lava Reef Zone Act 2 - Sonic and Knuckles
  11. Never Return Alive - Streets of Rage 2
  12. Concentration - Super Monaco GP
  13. Smooth Criminal - Michael Jackson's Moonwalker
  14. Act 1 Boss - Sonic the Hedgehog 3
  15. Dub Slash - Streets of Rage 3
  16. Diamond Dust Zone Act 1 - Sonic 3D
  17. BGM 3 - World Cup Italia '90
  18. Star Light Zone - Sonic the Hedgehog
  19. Ninja Step - Revenge of Shinobi
  20. Theme of Seven-Force - Gunstar Heroes

  24. Atropos - Columns
  25. Visitor's Center - Jurassic Park
  26. Metropolis Zone - Sonic the Hedgehog 2
  27. Hard Road - Super Hang-On
Some of these not to your taste? Here's five alternatives...
  1. Fighting in the Street - Streets of Rage

Mixtape: Best Cover Versions Vol. 2

Hi everyone, it's been a while since I posted on this site, and it's been even longer since I did an official Mixtape! I haven't done a Mixtape in five and a half years, crazy! Anyway, in case you're not sure what a Mixtape is, here's an explanation...

A Mixtape is a playlist of a certain genre, band or era. The list is generally 80 minutes long, the same length of a blank CD, with further recommendations if some of the songs aren't to your taste. Remember kids, downloading is wrong!

Back in 2011 I did a Mixtape of my favourite cover versions, and, looking back on it, it's a very good list and I agree with most of my suggestions on the list. But, in the past 7 years there have been some belters that have come out, and, also, looking back on the list from 2011, I did miss out on some amazing cover versions. So I decided to do a Volume 2 of my favourite cover versions! Now, this list is probably just as good as Volume 1 so check them both out if you get time - to find the first list simply click here.

Before I begin I'd just like to rule out artists that do cover versions predominantly as an artist, like Weird Al Yankovic, who does parodies of songs, and Richard Cheese, who does amazing jazz versions of songs. If you've never heard the work of Richard Cheese, seriously, give the guy a listen, he's absolutely phenomenal and funny, let this song get you started. One more thing, linked below are the songs and if you click on the original artists (which are bracketed) you can listen to the originals, if I can find them. Anyway, onto the Mixtape!
  1. Band on the Run - Foo Fighters (Paul McCartney and Wings)
  2. My Girl - Jesus and Mary Chain (The Temptations)
  3. Those Were the Days - Mary Hopkin (Tamara Tsereteli)
  4. Hurt - Johnny Cash (Nine Inch Nails)
  5. Danger Zone - Psychostick (Kenny Loggins)
  6. Jack the Ripper - The Horrors (Screaming Lord Sutch)
  7. Rawhide - The Meteors (Frankie Laine)
  8. I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) - Toy Dolls (The Proclaimers)
  9. How I Could Just Kill a Man - Rage Against the Machine (Cypress Hill)
  10. Rise of the Eagles - The Prodigy (The Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster)
  11. Memorabilia - Nine Inch Nails (Soft Cell)
  12. Black Betty - Spiderbait (Ram Jam)
  13. The Sound of Silence - Disturbed (Simon and Garfunkel)
  14. Thieves - Limp Bizkit (Ministry)
  15. Five to One - Marilyn Manson (The Doors)
  16. United Forces - Ministry (Stormtroopers of Death)
  17. Rise - Jerk (Public Image Limited)
  18. Loverman - Metallica (Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds)
Some of these not to your taste? Here's five alternatives...
  1. Zombie - Breed 77 (The Cranberries)
  2. Kidnap the Sandy Claws - KoRn (Danny Elfman)
  3. Love Buzz - Nirvana (Shocking Blue)
  4. Golden Ticket - Primus (Jack Albertson and Peter Ostrum)
  5. Baby, I Love You - Ramones (The Ronettes)
To listen to the playlist on YouTube click here!

Well I hope you enjoyed this list. I tried to pick different songs that people may not have heard, or have considered before. Who knows, I might make Vol. 3 in another seven years time! Until next time, take care.

Mixtape: Best of UK #1s 1982 - 2012

Yesterday I posted my favourite UK #1 hits between the years 1952 and 1981. Why? Because the UK #1 is now sixty years old. We've had sixty years of popular music, and the charting of the popularity of it. So I decided I wanted to celebrate the past sixty years of music by revealing my favourite #1 hits. Because sixty years is such a long time I've made two lists, and this is the second one.

This Mixtape celebrates my favourite #1 hits from 1982 to 2012. This list of songs isn't as good as the list I put up yesterday, in my opinion anyway, because my favourite songs from the past 30 years hardly chart, nevermind get to #1. But there are some great tracks here, I'm sure you'll appreciate.

Don't know much about Mixtapes? Here are the rules.

A Mixtape is a playlist of a certain genre, band or era. The list is generally 80 minutes long, the same length of a blank CD, with further recommendations if some of the songs aren't to your taste. Remember kids, downloading is wrong!

So here we go! Here's a list of my favourite #1 hits from 1982 to 2012, with the date it got to the #1 spot! Enjoy!

This Mixtape is now available to listen to fully on YouTube so subscribe to me if you want to listen to it properly. Enjoy!
  1. Eye of the Tiger - Survivor (04/09/1982)
  2. Let's Dance - David Bowie (09/04/1983)
  3. Stand By Me - Ben E. King (21/02/1987)
  4. Goody Two Shoes - Adam Ant (12/06/1982)
  5. Should I Stay or Should I Go? - The Clash (03/03/1991)
  6. House of Fun - Madness (29/05/1982)
  7. Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen (15/12/1991)
  8. Dancing in the Street - Mick Jagger and David Bowie (07/09/1985)
  9. Your Woman - White Town (19/01/1997)
  10. Country House - Blur (20/08/1995)
  11. Brimful of Asha (Norman Cook Mix) - Cornershop (22/02/1998)
  12. Don't Speak - No Doubt (16/02/1997)
  13. The Importance of Being Idle - Oasis (28/08/2005)
  14. When the Sun Goes Down - Arctic Monkeys (22/01/2006)
  15. Paradise - Coldplay (01/01/2012)
  16. Deeper Underground - Jamiroquai (19/07/1998)
  17. Dare - Gorillaz (04/09/2005)
  18. Pretty Fly (For a White Guy) - The Offspring (24/01/1999)
  19. Rollin' - Limp Bizkit (21/01/2001)
  20. Killing in the Name - Rage Against the Machine (20/12/2009)
Don't like some of these? Give these five a try...
  1. The Drugs Don't Work - The Verve (07/09/1997)
  2. Stay - Shakespears Sister (16/02/1992)
  3. Bring Me to Life - Evanescence (08/06/2003)
  4. Ruby - Kaiser Chiefs (25/02/2007)
  5. Vertigo - U2 (14/11/2004)
So that's it! I hope you enjoyed both of these playlists, or Mixtapes as I call them. Sure, I complain about the lack of quality songs getting up the charts nowadays, but that's obviously my opinion, an unpopular one based on the fact that in the end, it's a popularity contest for musicians. But we have had some great songs get up to the top, and I used to really love listening to the chart show when I was younger, so this was a trip down memory lane in a certain way. I hope it was for you too.

This will be my last piece of work before Christmas. As you have probably noticed, I don't write much at the moment. I would like to see if I can address that properly in the New Year, but we'll see. Either way, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas if you celebrate it, and a Happy New Year. Take care!

Mixtape: Best of UK #1s 1952 - 1981

Last month was the sixty year anniversary of the first #1 hit single in this country. Our first ever #1 in this country went to Al Martino with "Here in My Heart". Since then we've had over 1000 songs get to the #1 spot, the spot all music artists aspire to get to in this country. It means that for at least one week, their song is the most popular and most requested. It's like being king for a week I suppose.

Now the problem with #1 hits for me is that it usually goes to pop stars. The word pop comes from popular obviously, so if, like me, you like your rock and metal, chances are it makes it THAT much harder for your favourite tracks to actually perform well in the charts, nevermind get the #1 spot. Over time for me, less of my favourite tracks are getting to the top, which is a damn shame. But that's life!

Either way, I want to celebrate the last sixty years in music, with my favourite #1 hits through the years. Because sixty years is such a long time, and there were so many great songs through the years (especially over the course of the sixties) I've divided the Mixtapes into two, meaning today you'll get the first 30 years of #1s, and tomorrow you'll get the last 30 years of #1s. Remember this is a biased list.

Mixtape: Best of Mindless Self Indulgence

Hey there and welcome to another one of my Mixtapes, this time showing you my favourite songs by Mindless Self Indulgence. When I usually do band specific Mixtapes they're usually celebrating them without promoting their singles. The reason why I do this is because their singles are usually their most popular songs, and chances are, you've heard them already. So to try and further show how great that artist is, I delve into their non-singles, pick out my favourite songs, and hope that you love those songs and further enjoy that artist.

This time though I'm including singles. Why? Two reasons. One, Mindless Self Indulgence aren't very popular, unfortunately. I made a call on this site around 18 months ago that MSI would eventually get the recognition they deserve; they're an incredibly underrated band that have a sound and image that is distinctive to the trite that's around metal in general today. I still stand by that statement, I truly think one day they'll get that recognition. Talent like that is hard to come by, and all it will take is one major release to get some fantastic mainstream attention, then they'll get that recognition. Secondly, they haven't released that many singles. They've only released 12 singles, and 6 of those were from their last album. So I thought I'd consider all of their songs, and funnily enough, of those 12 singles only 6 actually make the list anyway.

Here's a list of my favourite Mindless Self Indulgence songs!
In brackets are the albums each track is taken from.
Also, this Mixtape is now available to listen to fully on YouTube so subscribe to me if you want to listen to it properly. Enjoy!

If you're wondering why I'm making this list it's to promote one of my favourite bands, a band that I find terribly underrated. But also, because I'm seeing them in around a month's time. I can't wait. Seriously, give this band a listen if you haven't heard them before, they're terribly underrated. That's it from me, have a good day!

Inactivity

Hey everyone, I hope you're all doing well. This is just a quick update on my website to say I'm sorry for being so inactive the past few months, but the big move up the country, my splitting up with my wife, the birth of my son and the lack of work has meant that my time has had to be put to better use elsewhere. I now have a job but travelling an hour to and from work and to and from where my ex wife lives to see the kids means I barely have any time to even think about writing never mind actually doing it. Within time I'm hoping I can squeeze opinion articles once in a while, or create Mixtapes or short listings just to keep the ball running. The eighteen months I was really active on here was some of my best work and I definitely haven't lost the passion to write, just the time.

I just want to say thank you for all the support, personally and on my work, that I have been receiving in these hard times. I'm actually very happy in my life at the moment, just busy busy busy!

Take care of yourselves and I promise that when I do find the time to write again, it'll be as good (or bad!) as it has been before, if not better.

Thank you.

Johnny Mercyside

Mixtape: Best of Teenage Angst II

Hey there and welcome to another one of my Mixtapes. This is different however. This is the first time I've remade a Mixtape. Best of Teenage Angst II? Yes, because six years ago I made the Best of Teenage Angst. It was one of my first ever Mixtapes, possibly even the first. Click here to see it.

So why have I remade my Mixtape? Well I listened to it recently and looked at the list of songs, and I just thought it looked wrong. It looked a little dated in some ways; some of the songs were popular back in 2006 and have not really been as good. Obviously songs from the eighties live on, but modern songs die quickly, some of them do anyway. And also, I was looking at some of the songs and wondering what the logic was behind their selections? Johnny Mercyside of six years ago made some odd choices. For instance, why "Killing in the Name" by Rage Against the Machine? That song isn't a song about teenage angst. Is it a rebellion 'fuck you' song? Yes. But that's because they're sticking two fingers up at a lot of problems with the world. They weren't whining about things that weren't fair for kids. They were being adults. I could talk about other songs that aren't in the new list but I'd be here for a while.

So this is the NEW Best of Teenage Angst. New and improved. What is the logic behind the selections of these songs? Well either the lyrical content is a little immature, or aimed at young teenagers. Songs like "I Hate People" by Anti-Nowhere League is an example about how silly the lyrical content is. But then you have "I'm Eighteen" by Alice Cooper in here, a song that deals with the dilemmas of teenage life. "I'm a boy and I'm a man, I'm eighteen and I get confused everyday". So hopefully that explains it.

Best of Teenage Angst II! Also, this Mixtape is now available to listen to fully on YouTube so subscribe to me if you want to listen to it properly.
