Mixtape: Best of Industrial Vol. 2

Hey everyone and welcome to another Mixtape! Two in two weeks, they're coming like buses! Over seven years ago I did my first "Best of Industrial" Mixtape. You can find that link here. At the time I was struggling to create that Mixtape, reason being that while I love the genre, there weren't that many bands that I knew and loved beyond the obvious. Choosing around 20 artists of this genre isn't easy, certainly those of good quality. Yet the sound in its pure form is just beautiful. It's hard to put into words.

Anyway, doing this Part 2, seven years later was so much easier. I can't again explain why either. Perhaps my palette has increased for the genre? But it was always there and I've always loved it. As I said it's hard to explain!

Not familiar with the term Industrial? I'll copy and past what I put down in my Volume 1 because I explained it relatively well then.

The roots of Industrial music started in the seventies and with the Industrial Records company, but they weren't really successful, nor was the sound. But it inspired the "Post-Industrial" genre, what we now know as Industrial music. So if you're an Industrial purist, you could say that the list below is not Industrial music, but Post-Industrial music. I will continue to consider this Mixtape and the songs and sound as Industrial music, but let's not be ignorant to the original genre of the seventies. There's so many influences that helped made the genre, and there are so many influences from Industrial music that helped shape music today.

So what have I defined as Industrial below? Well, after the seventies Industrial Records scene, Industrial (or Post-Industrial) roots back to the early eighties. Arguably the first Post-Industrial band was Skinny Puppy, but of course, there were bands that influenced Skinny Puppy to make the sound they made, and there were a few bands around that time that while aren't Industrial as a sole genre, they also helped to the rise. Bands like Killing Joke, Bauhaus, Ministry, KMFDM and Kraftwerk are all bands that in some way, shape or form, helped Industrial music to become what it has been in the eighties, nineties and naughties.

But, and you can argue I'm biased in saying this, but to me, the band that pioneered Industrial music is Nine Inch Nails. A lot of the 1980s Industrial lacked melody, it sounded great but it was repetitive and became almost brainless music. But Nine Inch Nails added melody, added quality vocals and also started using ground breaking electronic metal music to add to the machinery sound that was Industrial music. As I said, I could be biased, as Nine Inch Nails are my favourite band.

Not familiar with my Mixtapes? Here are the rules.

A Mixtape is a playlist of a certain genre, band or era. The list is generally 80 minutes long, the same length of a blank CD, with further recommendations if some of the songs aren't to your taste. Remember kids, downloading is wrong!

This list you'll see below isn't just Industrial music. It's a celebration of the sound, and the sounds that have been influenced by Industrial music. Industrial music has been used in so many genres since the boring machine sound of the eighties, it's used in dance music, techno, alternative rock, indie, metal and most recently, dubstep. You name the genre, chances are Industrial had an assist in there for making the genre what it is today. So there's a lot of bands here that aren't Industrial. But I've selected certain songs by those bands, that have roots from the Industrial genre, and have them showcase how good the sound can be when done perfectly. I have some eighties industrial, nineties industrial, some electronic dance music and some heavy industrial metal.

Enjoy my second homage to Industrial music!
  1. Mr Self Destruct - Nine Inch Nails
  2. Hooker With a Penis - Tool
  3. Death - Skinny Puppy
  4. Flesh is the Law - Genitorturers
  5. Shut Me Up - Mindless Self Indulgence
  6. More and Faster (243) - KMFDM
  7. Electric Head Pt 2 - White Zombie

My Top 100 Favourite Songs 2010-14 Edition: #28

#28. "Get Up!" – KoRn (feat. Skrillex)
Released: 6/5/11
Album: The Path of Totality

So my favourite single by KoRn in this five year period we’re covering is the first single off the experiment dubstep/metal album, The Path of Totality. I can’t believe this album is five years old now. Anyhoo, so while this was the first single off the album, it wasn’t the “main” single, that honour goes to “Narcissistic Cannibal” which you may remember got to #61 on this list. For me though, this is a far stronger song, not only does it sound heavier than “Narcissistic Cannibal”, but I also think the dubstep sounds better too. I’ve never personally understood why the other song was either promoted more, or “preferred” per se, but nevermind. If there’s one song in my opinion that you need to listen to when it comes to the very debatable dubstep/metal album by KoRn, it’s this one. I personally loved that album, but it’s really one of those things – you need to hear it yourself to make your own judgement on it.
Here's the video if you want to hear it!

My Top 100 Favourite Songs 2010-14 Edition: #47

#47. “Never Never" – KoRn
Released: 12/8/13
Album: The Paradigm Shift

I was surprised with how much I liked this song. When I first heard it I didn't think much of it, but over time my feelings for it grew and grew. What I like most about it is that they still mix in a bit of the dubstep they used on the previous album. I loved their "Path of Totality" album so it gives me hope they haven't given up on that style of music all together. I ended up playing this song throughout 2013 and 2014 for that matter too, it's just a fantastic KoRn track, it's not a "killer" track or anything but it's a damn fine one regardless.

Here's the song if you want to hear it!

#50. “Fat Around the Heart" – King 810
Released: 3/7/14
Album: Memoirs of a Murderer

King 810 are a band that I discovered last year when I found out they were supporting Slipknot, who I was about to see live. In my opinion, they're the best new(ish) metal band around, as discussed on this site before, I believe metal as a genre is a dying art form but King 810 are really keeping it alive. King 810, I've promoted a few times before on this site but also on my radio shows, are a band from Flint, Michigan, which is known as the "murder capital" of the US. King 810 sing songs about life there, the struggle, the death and violence, and despite all that, their pride for their home. "Fat Around the Heart" is a song about these struggles, about life in Flint. The first verse says it all - "I grew up in the church on Sunday/Back again bury friends on Monday/They don't just die they are killed from the gun play or the heroin or a prison stay/It's a shame that we gotta live this way/Your nightmares ain't got nothin' on this place/So stay down stay away stay safe/Cuz you aren't built that way". "Fat Around the Heart" is a great song, lyrically and also as a metal track. If you like Slipknot, have not heard King 810 and want to get into some new music, definitely give this band a listen.

Here's the music video if you want to hear it!

My Top 100 Favourite Songs 2010-14 Edition: #61

#61. “Narcissistic Cannibal" – KoRn (feat. Skrillex and Kill the Noise)
Released: 21/10/11
Album: The Path of Totality

If you like dubstep and you like metal, there's an album you MUST listen to if you haven't already, and that's "The Path of Totality" by KoRn. I'm not going to say you'll like it or you'll hate it, but either way it's an album that needs your attention because it's just so different from anything else out there at the moment. KoRn really made a groundbreaking album, for good or for bad that mixes to very different genres together and created a very interesting sound. If you're interested I did review the album on this site, you can read that here.

As for "Nacissistic Cannibal" this is a very good song to get your head around the general sound of the album. It's not my favourite on the album, but collaborating with Skrillex for the main single off the album made perfect sense for KoRn and the end result is a song that does its very hardest to incoorporate the two genres together. The chorus is very similar to a lot of other KoRn tracks but then you have some pretty sweet electronic solo music towards the end courtesy of Skrillex. It's a fine track in my opinion, but as I said it's not for everyone.

Here's the music video if you want to hear it!

So my favourite music video of all time is...

#1: "Just" - Radiohead
Release Date: 1995
Director: Jamie Thraves
Fun Fact: To this day, no one knows what the secret message is in the video, Radiohead won't reveal anything!!
So it's all over now. Sorry if you're disappointed at all. Obviously I'm not. And I'm sure there are those who do agree that this is one of the best music videos of all time.

What can I say about this video? It's simple and incredibly effective. A man lies in the street for no reason at all and gets a lot of people concerned. Why is he lying on the floor? Why won't he say why? Why can't we touch him? That's the beauty of this video. It's using the power of psychology, the power of the unknown. We have no idea what the hidden message is in this video. Professionals have tried and failed to work it out. And twenty years later after this video comes out, the secret in the video is only known to Radiohead, presumably the director, and... that's about it? We'll never know.

If you haven't seen this video, please watch it. It's just such a simple yet crazy idea that riles me up big time. WHY IS HE ON THE FLOOR?! So yeah. This is my favourite music video of all time and I just love it. And hate it. But love it far more than hate it, for sure!
Note: This is the third and last video from the year 1995 in this list.

Here is the video for your enjoyment!

So that's the end! Thanks so much for joining me in revealing my 100 favourite music videos of all time. It's been a long 101 days but I've enjoyed it. It's been a lot more well received than I ever imagined and it's made me think of doing a Top 100 list of different varieties more often. I may do one list per year. So stay tuned for the next one!

My Top 100 Favourite Music Videos: #15

#15: "Freak on a Leash" - KoRn
Release Date: 1999
Director: Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris
Fun Fact: The video won three music video awards, most importantly a Grammy for Best Short Form Music Video in the year 2000!
Ah yes, the "bullet video". As overplayed as this video may be, you can't deny it's excellence. The video from start to finish looks so damn cool; the animations are drawn to perfection, and even to this day, that stray magical bullet looks so cool as it pierces everything in sight. It's just one of those videos really, unless you've seen it too often, that you become mesmerised watching; you just can't take your eyes off this bullet and the impact it makes on everything in sight.

This is a very short paragraph into this entry in my Top 100. Purely because the video speaks for itself as one of the best videos of all time, and of course, one of my personal favourites.

Here is the video for your enjoyment!

#50: "Firestarter" - The Prodigy
Release Date: 1996
Director: Walter Stern
Fun Fact: Even though it's not got any gore, violence, horror, swearing or drug use or anything visibly controversial, the video was banned before the watershed on certain channels because it was apparently too scary for children!
Ah yes. Firestarter. Such a great video. What's fascinating about this video is that they have done far more controversial videos than this... yet this one caused so much more controversy (probably "Smack My Bitch Up" being the only exception). Why? All it is, is Keith Flint, doing a promo video to the song with a mohican in an underground tunnel! But if you have seen the video, or if you watch it now, you will see why it caused some discomfort. Keith Flint is very intimidating in this video, bopping around like a lunatic, slapping his head constantly, getting in the "face" of the camera throughout. But it's just a brilliant video, despite very little actually happening.

Keith Flint has incredible presence and a certain scary aura about him, and frankly, you can't keep your eyes on him. You barely notice that there are other people in the video other than him, that's how much you're fixated with the man!

My Top 100 Favourite Music Videos: #59

#59: "Twisted Transistor" - KoRn
Release Date: 2005
Director: Dave Meyers
Fun Fact: The four hip hop artists are Lil Jon as Jonathan Davis, Xzibit as Fieldy, David Banner as David Silveria and Snoop Dogg as Munky!
I do feel like this video is incredibly underrated. I mean, I'm sure a lot of metal fans really like this video but truly, it deserves a lot more attention and a lot more respect. I honestly don't know if this idea has ever been done before, or since. Four major hip hop artists pretending to be a metal band? It's an awesome concept and it's hilarious.

If you like these hip hop artists or not, you have to appreciate the great jobs they did in being fake versions of the members of KoRn. I'm not sure who I like most, it's a toss-up between Snoop Dogg being a very (very!) angry version of Munky, or Xzibit being a very (very!) pukey alter ego of Fieldy. I do also love the vein David Banner, modelling and worrying about a cut on his face. It's just a hilarious video, and to see the actual members of KoRn at the end being spoof music execs is just the icing on the cake. If you've not seen this video watch it! NOW!

Here's the video for your enjoyment!

The Mercyside 100 2014

Hi everyone, this is my first post in nearly eight months. For the last two years I've been calculating all my play counts on my personal media player, to see what songs I listen to the most. And then at the start of the year I reveal what 100 songs I've listened to the most. Last year I revealed The Mercyside 100 2013, which was done in seven parts in great detail on this website and as seven DJ shows on my Mixcloud account.

This year I did The Mercyside 100 2014. Instead of 7 parts, I decided to cut it to four parts. So each of the four parts revealed 25 different songs, in reverse order of how often I played them.

You can listen to these four DJ shows on the links below:

Part 1: #100 to #76
Part 2: #75 to #51
Part 3: #50 to #26
Part 4: #25 to #1

I'm not going to go into great detail on this website, like I did last year. But what I will do is reveal to you what the 100 songs were, in reverse order. So if you don't want to find out this way, listen to the shows linked above!

So, in reverse order, here are is The Mercyside 100 2014! These are 100 songs I played more than anything else last year.

So, what was the most played song of the year for me? Here it is...

#1: Snap Out of It - Arctic Monkeys ("AM", 2013)

So there we go! I hope you choose to listen to the shows because they are much better to listen to rather than just see them as words on a screen. Music is for the ears after all! But if not, I hope you find some interesting entries in here, and if so, check them out on Youtube if you would rather do it that way than to listen to the actual shows! If there's something on this list you've not heard before and you end up really liking, let me know, comment below! I'd be happy to have gotten you into a song or an artist you've not heard before!
