My Top 10 Games NOT Featured on the GameFAQs.com Game of the Decade List

Hey all, and welcome to another video game listing. So yesterday I counted down my 10 Favourite  Games Featured on the GAmeFAQs.com Game of the Decade List. You can read that by clicking here. I also did that same listing 10 years ago with the previous decade, you can read that by clicking here.

So GameFAQs nominated their users to choose their favourite games of the decade and narrowed it down to their Top 128. That's a lot of games to be fair. But for me, there were some omissions that deserved some love. This is not taking away anything from the 128 games on the list, these are wonderful games, but I just felt that some other games needed highlighting too. So without any further delay, here are my Top 10 Games of the Decade NOT featured on that list.

#10: Armello
Available On: PC, Playstation 4, XBox One, Nintendo Switch
Original Release: 2015
My Rating: ****1/4 stars
My friend and sister both got me into Armello and I must say it's been a heck of a treat, playing this game. Armello does the perfect job in combining board games with online game play, the way the game plays out you genuinely wouldn't put it past the idea that the game was a board game before a video game. The truth is it's not, it's purely an online game. It had mixed to positive reviews on release but has since developed a strong cult fan base. If you want to try a different strategy RPG style board game, definitely give this a try. It's definitely best played online.

#9: Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy
Available On: PC, Playstation 4, XBox One, Nintendo Switch
Original Release: 2017
My Rating: ****1/4 stars
I've reviewed this game for this website, you can view it here.

I was disappointed when I discovered that neither Crash Bandicoot Trilogy Remaster or Spyro Trilogy Remaster made the GameFAQs list, disappointed and a little surprised. A lot of GameFAQs users are actually a similar age to me (*coughs* early thirties *coughs*) so nostalgia does have a place in some of these placements. Both trilogies were solid remasters and done very well, and for me, Crash Bandicoot just edges it. I think Activision had a difficult job on their hands, ensuring that the games they were remastering were treated will the utmost care, because it wasn't their games when they were released in the late nineties. But they did it complete justice; the gameplay felt fresh yet almost identical to the original, and the addition of certain levels as free DLC and doing the Relic challenges on all three games were lovely touches.

#8: Rogue Legacy
Available On: PC, Playstation 3, PS Vita, Playstation 4, XBox One, Nintendo Switch
Original Release: 2013
My Rating: ****1/4 stars
The first time I heard about this game was actually by my son, he must have been four at the time - genuinely. He said that his Mum plays it at her house and I should give it a go. And honestly, it's a tremendous game. It's a rogue metroidvania game where you try and rescue the king in a randomly generated castle dungeon. You are likely to die many times playing through the game, and every time you do, your child tries to redeem your death, taking your abilities and coin forward to the next generation. It's very child friendly, at moments very funny and has a surprisingly deeper plot than it lets on at the beginning. It's well worth your time if you want to play a platformer that you may not have heard of before.

#7: Doki Doki Literature Club!
Available On: PC
Original Release: 2017
My Rating: ****1/4 stars
I implore you, if you have a PC and a Steam account, download this game. It's free. And whatever you do, don't check out for spoilers, and ride it out. It will take you 2 to 4 hours maximum.

You may start playing the game thinking, what is this? A dating sim? Why am I still playing it? It's cheesy, cringey, fluffy nonsense. Keep playing it. Ride it out. Trust me. The game takes a turn. And when it does, you won't look back. This is one of the scariest games I've ever played. And it's FREE. Download it and play it, please, I beg you. I don't want to say more than that. You won't regret it.

#6: Limbo
Available On: PC, XBox 360, XBox One, Playstation 3, Playstation 4, Nintendo Switch
Original Release: 2010
My Rating: ****1/4 stars
I've reviewed this game for this website, you can view it here.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that Inside had made the Top 128 when nominations game in from GameFAQs users, but shocked when I realised that Limbo didn't make the cut. Out of the two experiences, I would have thought a lot of fans would have chosen Limbo, it's the original, it has a stronger art design and it made a much bigger impact upon release. Both games are incredible of course. If you want to play a game that looks absolutely stunning, full of puzzles and traps, lots of great atmospheric ambience then give this game a go. It's available very cheap nowadays. Again it's not the longest game in the world and can be finished in a few hours, but it's truly a wonderful experience with a plot that has been the topic of many a discussion to what the game truly is about and how it can be interpreted in many ways.

#5: Outlast
Available On: PC, Playstation 4, XBox One, Nintendo Switch
Original Release: 2013
My Rating: ****1/4 stars
When it comes to games on this list that truly surprised me that didn't make the cut, Outlast is definitely up there. While Resident Evil 7 made the list, there are true claims to be made that Resi 7 may not have existed the way it did if it wasn't for the likes of Outlast and PT having the impact they did. PT isn't a game but a demo of course, but Outlast was released and scared the absolute bejeezus out of people. It's truly a terrifying game that needs to be played. It showed horror fans a revitalised way of playing scary games, with the use of darkness, gritty graphics, and feeling truly defenceless. Outlast's camera and battery finding system really was a stroke of genius. Of course Outlast II upped the ante, but for me, the Outlast is the better experience, but both are worth a visit for horror fans.

#4: Until Dawn
Available On: Playstation 4
Original Release: 2015
My Rating: ****1/4 stars
When it comes to a polished horror experience, look no further than Until Dawn. This game mixes novel narration with horror to perfection. Again, I'm very surprised it didn't make the cut because many fans were surprised by how solid this game was. Until Dawn is probably the best "horror cliche" movie turned into video game ever made. What Heavy Rain did for murder and spy drama movies, Until Dawn does with horror movies. It takes its sweet time introducing you to these friends with different personalities and gives you the opportunity to see them all survive or die in the game. It has many great sequences and plenty of gory deaths on offer. Until Dawn is a must play for horror fans in a very different way to how Outlast was above.

#3: Final Fantasy XIII
Available On: PC, Playstation 3, XBox 360
Original Release: 2010
My Rating: ****1/2 stars
I've reviewed this game for this website, you can view it here.

I know this entry will divide people, it divides more Final Fantasy fans than any other entry in the series. I was surprised to see Final Fantasy XV in the 128 games cut but not XIII. For me it's a solid Final Fantasy experience. Is it perfect? No. Is it linear? Yes. But I love the battle system and the story, when you break it down is incredible. The stagger system that's getting so much love in Final Fantasy VII Remake stemmed from the very same stagger system that FF13 introduced. A lot of fans are torn on this game, in the same way why they were torn on XII - for me XIII is a much better game than XII. I'll leave it at that.

#2: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors
Available On: PC, PS Vita, Playstation 4, Nintendo DS
Original Release: 2010
My Rating: ****1/2 stars
I was pleasantly surprised when I read that Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward made the 128 games shortlist. I never expected any of the Zero Escape games to make the list because they have such a cult following. For me, the original game was the best of the trilogy and is a must when it comes to a starting point in this trilogy. If you want to try something different, definitely give the Zero Escape games a go. These games are Japanese visual novels with puzzle gameplay, but have some of the strongest narrative I've ever seen in a video game. In this game nine people are kidnapped and placed on a boat to play a game. The nine people all have numbered bracelets and must try and find ways to survive and escape the ship. Why are they on the boat? What do they have in common? Who kidnapped them and why? It's a great game that is terribly underrated. Do yourself a favour too and don't spoil the game for yourself, play through the games blind in order, starting with this one. The twists and turns throughout the gameplay will keep you guessing throughout the whole game in terms of what is going on.

#1: Detroit: Become Human
Available On: PC, Playstation 4
Original Release: 2018
My Rating: ****1/2 stars
When it comes to defining gaming moments of the decade, Detroit Become Human is very high on my list. I was very happy to see Heavy Rain make the 128 cut, but disappointed when I discovered this game didn't. Is it better than Heavy Rain? Many fans don't think so, but I do. What I love so much about this game is that it creates a bleak but equally possible future for humanity and robots. Robots have taken jobs and will continue to do so. There will be a time in the future when robots will be able to do things to make our lives even easier. Will robots ever become sentient? Many think so. The choices available in this game for its three robots really tests you as a person. Do you want them to be slaves to humans? Should they be sentient? There's that and so much more in this game. I cried during moments of this game in ways I haven't done for a long long time. I have no shame in that. It moved me in so many ways and I'm so thankful to have had this game in my life and it truly was one of the best gaming experiences of this decade, and deserves much more attention.

I hope you enjoyed the list. What for you are the best games of the last 10 years? Comments below are greatly appreciated. Until next time, take care and see you soon!

So my favourite Playstation 1 game is...

#1 - Final Fantasy IX
Released: 2000
Genre: RPG
Rating: ****3/4 stars
Best Moment: The ending. For me, this is possibly my favourite ending in video game history. It gets reduces me to tears. Every. Damn. Time.
Well, if you know me personally, you probably knew more than 50 days ago that my #1 game was going to be Final Fantasy IX. It would possibly top my favourite games of all time list, if I were to ever make one, which I may well do one day.

FF9 to me is everything. Sure, I didn't give it a perfect score of 5 stars, but I don't think a game has been released that I'd rate a perfect score. FF9 has some flaws, some frustrating moments even, but it has HEART. It has more heart than any game I've ever played, period. This game makes me emotional in so many different ways. The story is perfect, the characters are just a great bunch, the music is timeless, the graphics are beautiful in their flawed way. I just have so much love for this game it's unreal. I even named my daughter, Vivi, after the black mage in this game. That black mage is, one of the best characters in video game history by the way.

FF9 is not the first Final Fantasy game I played. It's not even the first Final Fantasy I'd suggest people play. It's for a very particular audience. It has an old school, nostalgic, poetic feel to it. It does play like the classic Final Fantasy games but it's also harder than other games, probably intentionally as a nod to the very classic FF games on the NES. But the way the story is told, the twists and turns, the excellent cast of varied characters, and, for me, the most perfect ending, is what makes this game truly special. I do struggle to put into words why I love this game so much, but this has been my best effort. I just love this game with all my heart, and for me, undisputedly, is my Favourite Playstation 1 Game.

So Final Fantasy IX, congratulations, you've earned this prestigious trophy!

Here's some nerdy stats if you're into that thing!

Video Game Series With Multiple Entries
Crash Bandicoot - 5 (Crash Bandicoot #24, Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back #13, Crash Bandicoot 3 Warped! # 4, Crash Team Racing #6, Crash Bash #41)

Best PS1 Game Per Year
1995 - Tekken - ***3/4 #44
1996 - Resident Evil - ****1/2 #9
1997 - Final Fantasy VII - ****3/4 #3
1998 - Resident Evil 2 - ****3/4 #2
1999 - Crash Team Racing - ****1/2 #6
2000 - Final Fantasy IX - ****3/4 #1

Total Games Per Year
As you can see, the year 1999 dominated my list. It's one of my all time favourite years in video game history. Crash Team Racing, Worms Armageddon, FF8, Silent Hill, Legend of Dragoon, Resi 3, FIFA 2000 all are in my Top 20!

Best PS1 Game By Genre
Party - Crash Bash - ***3/4 #41
Puzzle - Bust a Move 2 - ***3/4 #39
Action - Driver - **** #31
Strategy - Worms Armageddon - ****1/2 #8
Sports - WWF Smackdown! 2: Know Your Role - ****1/2 #7

Fighting - Tekken 3 - ****3/4 #5
Platformer - Crash Bandicoot 3 Warped! - ****3/4 #4
Horror - Resident Evil 2 - ****3/4 #2
RPG - Final Fantasy IX - ****3/4 #1

Total Games By Genre
So Platformers, Fighting games and Sports games dominate the list. Despite RPGs being my favourite genre, there were only 5 in the list, compared to the 9 Platformers in the list.

So... that's pretty much it from me! Thanks for reading my Top 50 Favourite Playstation 1 Games list. To go back all the way to #50 click here!

My Top 50 Favourite Playstation 1 Games: #3

If you missed #4 click here.

#3 - Final Fantasy VII
Released: 1997
Genre: RPG
Rating: ****3/4 stars
Best Moment: The end of Disc 1 brings me to tears every time. I played through FF7 again earlier this year, and over 20 years later I still cried.
When it comes to listing the games that influenced me and my life the most, this game is very possibly top of the list. Sure, I like some (not many) games more than FF7, but this game is everything to me. It was my first RPG game. It was my first Final Fantasy game. It was the first video game to make me cry. It was the first many other things too. This game opened up the world of video games to me possibly more than any other game. Final Fantasy VII was probably the first time I experienced video games not just as games, but as genuine pieces of art.

FF7's story is insane. The characters are individually eclectic and memorable. The music is just beautiful. The graphics, sure, aren't the best, but the battle system was simple and innovative. The summons were just mesmerising at the time. Sephiroth is simply one of the best villains of all time, that's not even a dispute. The game meant so many things to so many people, and, of course, now we have a remake in the works. This game was... just amazing. I struggle to put into words what this game means to me and to many others like me, but I hope I've done it some justice. It's my third favourite Playstation 1 game, sure, it's not #1 but that takes nothing away from this game. It could have easily been #1, and is for many other people. But there's just two more games that just do ever-so slightly more for me than this. You'll find out what tomorrow and Thursday.

What was the runner up in my Top 50? Click here to find out!

My Top 50 Favourite Playstation 1 Games: #10

If you missed #11 click here.

#10 - Final Fantasy VIII
Released: 1999
Genre: RPG
Rating: ****1/2 stars
Best Moment: The intro. Spoiler alert - if I ever do a listing on my favourite intros in video game history, this will be #1. It's just magnificent.
As a huge Final Fantasy fan, surely, you knew that the FF games were going to be highly placed on this list?! But it wasn't all plain sailing for FF8. It is, by a noticeable margin, my least favourite FF game on the Sony Playstation 1. But again, it's an incredible game. I actually reviewed the game back in 2006 when I was a teenager, and looking back on the review it's not the best article I've done. Either way, you can read it here.

All three Final Fantasy games on the PS1 are classics. FF8 was very different at the time though. Firstly, the graphics were just INSANE. Sure they may look dated now, but, to be honest, you'd be hard pressed to find a better looking game on the PS1 across the entire game selection. The FMVs are just gorgeous, and the character models were great for 1998. The Junction system really changed things for FF8 comparatively with the previous entries in the series. Your summon monsters control everything, from your magic to your abilities, from what elements you're strong against and even enemy encounter rates. Drawing magic in FF8 is where you get your strength however, and this is a very laborious task, hence the reason why I find this game to be the weakest of the trilogy on the PS1. But the story is marvelous, the music is great, the battling is lots of fun when you don't depend on drawing magic. The summon monsters look absolutely badass and some of the locations in the game are just incredible. FF8 is definitely one of the best RPGs ever made, but, in my opinion, there were better entries into the Final Fantasy series.

My Top 50 Favourite Playstation 1 Games: #14

If you missed #15 click here.

#14 - The Legend of Dragoon
Released: 1999
Genre: RPG
Rating: ****1/2 stars
Best Moment: When you start nailing the really difficult Additions - they're tough to master but it's so good when you start landing them over and over again!
If you're a fan of the classic Final Fantasy games and want to feel a similar buzz that you had playing those games, and struggle to find any, give Legend of the Dragoon a go. Some have called this a Final Fantasy ripoff, some have called it a great homage to the Japanese RPG classic. Some have said this is clunky, difficult and poor, where as others say it's a brilliant alternative to those FF games. I'm one of the latter.

The Legend of Dragoon plays very similar to the Final Fantasy games, but, for me, there's a few distinctive differences between this and the legendary FF games. Firstly is the Additions - which replaces any "normal" attacking most RPG games offer, by basically inviting you to chain combo attacks against your enemy. You have to time your moves to perfection, or risk missing and wasting far less damage. It's difficult to get used to doing the Additions but once you get the hang of it, it really opens up gameplay, and makes those normal battles between cutscenes and boss fights count. Secondly is the Dragoons themselves. Without spoiling the game too much, Dragoons have the power to control the spirits of dragons and give you magical powers. Each character and their respective Dragoon powers offer a different element, and really do dramatically change the course of boss battles, depending on who you have in your party and when.

All in all The Legend of Dragoon is a great alternative RPG game on the PS1 to the Final Fantasy games and the story is really good too, with some really unpredictable plot twists in the game. I highly recommend this game, and if you want a physical copy of the game, good luck, it's super rare now and costs a lot of money.

My Top 50 Favourite Playstation 1 Games: #19

If you missed #20 click here.

#19 - Jade Cocoon
Released: 1998
Genre: RPG
Rating: ****1/4 stars
Best Moment: Catching and merging monsters. You can get some incredible looking beasts by merging the right two together!
I feel sorry for the Jade Cocoon makers because they had something good going on and they got sucker punched big time. Back when this game came out, it was considered to be a Pokemon ripoff, Sony's attempt at trying to make a Pokemon-esque game on their console to compete with Nintendo's Pokemon megahit. For some reason very few people played this game, and those that did got a really good game, that, capturing beasts aside, had very little in common with Pokemon. They released a second game on the PS2 that didn't sell well either. Now Jade Cocoon has pretty much faded into obscurity, apart from to be mentioned by fans of the now cult classic. Where as Pokemon has continued to become a worldwide phenomenon.

Jade Cocoon allows you to capture beasts and use them in battle against other beasts in the forest. That's pretty much all the two games have in common. Beneath that is a very deep and rich story in Jade Cocoon, where as you, a lone cocoon master, must venture into the forest to try and find a cure for the people of your village, who most have fallen into a deep sleep. The journey starts off that way but gets deeper and darker as you start to unravel your past and question your relationship with your friends and even your wife. It's a great game, if a little short, that really got overlooked by far too many people. If you're looking for an RPG on the PS1 that is not called Final Fantasy, give this a go.

#28 - Ehrgeiz: God Bless the Ring
Released: 1998
Genre: Fighting
Rating: **** stars
Best Moment: Just Quest Mode, I get so addicted to playing that!
I'm not going to lie, I'm probably rating this game to highly. Thing is, Ehrgeiz isn't the best fighting game. But... there's two things that make me love this game. The first, of course, is the fact that there's many Final Fantasy VII characters in the game. But the second thing is Quest Mode.

Quest Mode is basically a dungeon crawler RPG game with randomly generated levels. On Normal mode you can escape the dungeon and regroup, before tackling it again and again, where as on Hard mode you're not able to escape and have to take on the 20 levels in one go. It's highly addictive but it's also really hard. This Quest Mode is the main reason why I play Ehrgeiz.

As for the main game, it's an okay fighter. The characters, aside from the Final Fantasy ones, are quite bland, and their movesets aren't that great. It just doesn't feel that groundbreaking at all. At least it helped form the base for future Final Fantasy fighting games in the Dissidia series.
