Okay so my favourite song over the Last Half Decade is…

#1 “The Hunter” by Slaves
Released: 17/11/14
Album: Are You Satisfied?
If you know me well, chances are high you probably had an inkling that this would be #1 on my list. And you know what? I actually debated putting it lower in the list because of the fact that it was an obvious choice for me. But when it comes down to it, there is only one song that stands out to me as above and beyond anything else released over this five year period.

I absolutely love this song. I absolutely love this band. I’m so happy I got to see them last month, they were incredible. I love the riff, I love how the song builds up, the video is pretty cool too, it’s discretely catchy and it’s… just… so… cool. I’m not a massive punk rock fan but with Slaves making garage rock merge with punk (a formula done by other bands, I’m not saying they’re the first) they have something that does sound raw and passionate and it packs a massive punch. I do encourage anyone who likes British rock, or punk, or garage rock a listen to this band. Seriously they’re one of the coolest new bands out there, and this is their biggest hit to date, and, clearly in my opinion, the best too.

Here's the video if you want to hear it!

And that’s it! Many thanks for putting up for my long periods of absences in the making of this listing. I’ll probably do a Top 100 Favourite Music Singles of the Decade of 2010-19 in the year 2021 or something. Here’s some nerdy stats of my listing if it appeals to you:

I thought I’d do a Mixtape Playlist so if you wanted to listen to the “Best Of” in one go, you can do now this way. I’ve set a cap of only one song per artist. Not familiar with my Mixtapes, here’s a description of what one is:
A Mixtape is a playlist of a certain genre, band or era. The list is generally 80 minutes long, the same length of a blank CD, with further recommendations if some of the songs aren't to your taste. Remember kids, downloading is wrong!

My Top 100 Favourite Songs 2010-14 Edition: #21

#21. "Howlin’ For You” – The Black Keys
Released: 11/2/11
Album: Brothers

Here’s the thing about this song – for a long time I had heard it but never knew what it was called and actually, who sung it. You may know that I appeared on Winter Wipeout (a spinoff of Total Wipeout, yes with the big red balls, you can read about my experience in great detail here). Well when that episode aired on TV nearly five years ago, on that episode my fellow contestant Mark (or Howling Mark) had this song playing in the background. I liked the sound of it but couldn’t put my finger on who sung the song or what it was called (I know, Howling Mark should have given it away but I digress.)

I only properly discovered the song a couple of years ago when it was again used on a fantastic TV show called “Release the Hounds”. I then searched tooth and nail for what the song was and was really annoyed when I found out it was under my nose all this time. I mean how could I not know it was the Black Keys? It’s quite hard to find a song though, lyrics wise, if all you can hear is “da-da da da da, da-da da da da”! It’s a fantastic song was a stupendously catchy chorus, and my eldest son fell in love with it when I started playing it over and over again two years ago. I love it.

My Top 100 Favourite Songs 2010-14 Edition: #34

#34. "Lonely Boy" – The Black Keys
Released: 26/10/11
Album: El Camino

This video got featured in last year's Top 100 Favourite Music Videos of All Time list getting to a very respectable 56th place - mainly because it's so fucking brilliant. Honestly, if you've not seen this video, just watch it. Watch it NOW!

Thank you. As for the actual song, it's just the Black Keys at their best. Incredibly bluesy but in a hard rock kind of way, the song is so catchy and simple, a bit like the video in actual fact. The main riff is just so freaking cool and it's the glue that holds the song together. I don't mind admitting however that the video makes the song so so much cooler, sometimes it's the way it is with music, visual aid emphasises the strong points of a song, and this music video does just that.

Here's the video if you want to hear it!

#50. “Fat Around the Heart" – King 810
Released: 3/7/14
Album: Memoirs of a Murderer

King 810 are a band that I discovered last year when I found out they were supporting Slipknot, who I was about to see live. In my opinion, they're the best new(ish) metal band around, as discussed on this site before, I believe metal as a genre is a dying art form but King 810 are really keeping it alive. King 810, I've promoted a few times before on this site but also on my radio shows, are a band from Flint, Michigan, which is known as the "murder capital" of the US. King 810 sing songs about life there, the struggle, the death and violence, and despite all that, their pride for their home. "Fat Around the Heart" is a song about these struggles, about life in Flint. The first verse says it all - "I grew up in the church on Sunday/Back again bury friends on Monday/They don't just die they are killed from the gun play or the heroin or a prison stay/It's a shame that we gotta live this way/Your nightmares ain't got nothin' on this place/So stay down stay away stay safe/Cuz you aren't built that way". "Fat Around the Heart" is a great song, lyrically and also as a metal track. If you like Slipknot, have not heard King 810 and want to get into some new music, definitely give this band a listen.

Here's the music video if you want to hear it!

My Top 100 Favourite Songs 2010-14 Edition: #58

#58. “Tighten Up" – The Black Keys
Released: 23/4/10
Album: Brothers

I think "Tighten Up" was actually the first song I'd heard by The Black Keys. It was on FIFA 11 and I played that game a lot. At first I tolerated the song but, like a lot of songs on FIFA, you end up really liking them because you hear them so much on the Menus in the game. Like a lot of songs by The Black Keys, the song is mid-tempo with catchy a guitar riff. I can't put my finger on why I like this song as much as I do, but it's one of those songs I just like to sing along to... very badly! The song also won a Grammy and is actually one of their most successful songs to date. It's just a very good song basically!

Here's the music video if you want to hear it!

Got it? Good. Well then, let's start off the Top 50!

#50: "Firestarter" - The Prodigy
Release Date: 1996
Director: Walter Stern
Fun Fact: Even though it's not got any gore, violence, horror, swearing or drug use or anything visibly controversial, the video was banned before the watershed on certain channels because it was apparently too scary for children!
Ah yes. Firestarter. Such a great video. What's fascinating about this video is that they have done far more controversial videos than this... yet this one caused so much more controversy (probably "Smack My Bitch Up" being the only exception). Why? All it is, is Keith Flint, doing a promo video to the song with a mohican in an underground tunnel! But if you have seen the video, or if you watch it now, you will see why it caused some discomfort. Keith Flint is very intimidating in this video, bopping around like a lunatic, slapping his head constantly, getting in the "face" of the camera throughout. But it's just a brilliant video, despite very little actually happening.

Keith Flint has incredible presence and a certain scary aura about him, and frankly, you can't keep your eyes on him. You barely notice that there are other people in the video other than him, that's how much you're fixated with the man!

My Top 100 Favourite Music Videos: #56

#56: "Lonely Boy" - Black Keys
Release Date: 2011
Director: Jesse Dylan
Fun Fact: The dancing man, Derek Tuggle is an actor, musician, and a part time security guard!
Another awesome fact is that this wasn't the original video - the original video had a script and around 40 actors and everything, but the band weren't happy with the video edit at all. They sent it back and got a re-edit which too was crap. Then they got this dude to dance spontaneously for the video! Derek was an extra on the set at the time and did a completely improvised dance for the song.

I just love this video, Derek's moves are great if not completely flawed, which gives the video and song so much character. I love how he looks a little nervous and you can tell just by looking at him that he doesn't know what moves are going to come out next. It's just a simple and lovable video that anyone can watch - it truly has to be seen if you've not seen it before!

Here's the video for your enjoyment!

Mercy Licks - January 2013

Hey there, and welcome to a new section of my website. Due to not posting much at the moment this may well be the only section I might actually update regularly going forward. I just don't have the motivation to write much at the minute, I have a lot of other things I'm enjoying in life. I do have this to fall back on whenever I get some motivation, or something to do though. It's a hobby not a job!

Anyway, this section is basically me revealing to you the ten songs I've been listening to the most every month. I've started tracking songs and how much I play them now, I'm a statistical nerd like that you see. Why have I done this? I really don't know, I just find it quite interesting to see what songs I listen to the most and when, and of course, to recommend them to you if you haven't heard them before. If this goes my way I might do an "end of year" list as well, but we'll see.

So what are the Ten Mercy Licks of January 2013? Let's find out...

#10: "Sixteen Saltines" - Jack White
This is definitely one of the best tracks of 2012. Jack White finally branches out on his own and his stuff sounds as fresh as anything he's ever done in honesty. The side projects he has done have been hit and miss, usually more hit to be fair, but still, this is a belter track that really shows the true talent of Mr White. Keep it going sir!

#9: "She Bangs" - Ricky Martin
Really Johnny Mercyside? Really? Ricky Martin? You? Listened to this very often last month? Yes, it's true. I have to be honest I have no shame in liking some cheesy pop nowadays. I used to avoid pop and RnB like a house on fire but now I've really relaxed my refrainment for the genres of music I usually dislike. This song came on in the pub when I went out for a drink with some awesome friends and we danced terribly to it. Since then I've enjoyed putting it on once in a while. It's a very catchy pop song. No embarassment about it!

#8: "Gangnam Style" - PSY
...but of course. Yes I love "Gangnam Style" and yes I've played this song possibly more than any other song in the past half year. And yes, I still play it in January 2013. I can't help it. I just love the song, love the video and to be honest, love PSY. You have to hear some of his other stuff. "Gangnam Style" will probably be a one hit wonder for PSY but it really shouldn't be, because he's actually a lot more talented than that. Check his other stuff out if you get a chance.

#7: "Blackout" - Linkin Park
I love this song. It's become one of my favourite ever by Linkin Park. It's also another of the songs I've been playing a lot over the past few months. I first heard it on FIFA 11, like a lot of people. It's arguably the song responsible for me reigniting my interest in the band, as I wasn't really too high on their most recent stuff. It's just a brilliant track, and well worth a listen if you haven't heard it before.

#6: Zerstoren - Rammstein
One of my favourite all time Rammstein songs. I recently got all of the Rammstein discography and was playing their stuff on random. I hadn't listened to of "Rosenrot" before then, so I'd never heard this song. When it came on random the song just blew me away. It's just such a fricking cool song, and is definitely one you need to hear if you haven't before.

#5: "Gold on the Ceiling" - Black Keys
Another band I can thank FIFA for igniting interest in. I was never big on the Black Keys until I heard "Tighten Up", then of course, I heard the amazing "Lonely Boy" and decided to get El Camino, and of course, this is one of the best songs on the album. It was released as a single too. It's just really cool, and shows why the Black Keys take a slightly different approach to their alternative rock than a lot of the other bands around nowadays.

#4: "Salt in the Wounds" - Pendulum
Read what I said about Rammstein and copy and paste. I recently got all of Pendulum's stuff and was pleasantly surprised to really like a lot of it, considering I'm not really into my drum 'n' bass, which a lot of the album material is. But "Salt in the Wounds" is just amazing. I even love the dubstep section towards the end of the song. I love blasting this track and adding some of the bass to it. It's just excellent.

#3: "Electric Worry" - Clutch
I'd be lying to you if I told you I'd heard of Clutch more recently than the turn of the new year. Somehow the band have gone over my head. A friend suggested I look them up and this track was the first to be played. I later found out it was actually used in a lot of Left 4 Dead 2 advertising, so it's very possibly I'd heard this before. It's a really cool country/hard rock hybrid track that sounds fantastic. I'm definitely looking into getting into more Clutch soon.

#2: "Go Right Ahead" - The Hives
I'm surprised to reveal I've listened this song the second most last month. But I must have done. It's a good track, it's a very safe track to be honest, for The Hives to release. It's nothing really special, but it still kicks enough ass to be noticed. I'm not trying to say it's a bad song, it's not, it's very good, and incredibly catchy, but in honesty The Hives have released far better than this in the past.

#1: "We Like Them Girls" - Your Favourite Martian
Ah... Your Favourite Martian. If you've not heard, YFM are Ray William Johnson's music group. RWJ is the most subscribed man on Youtube, showcasing the best viral videos two days a week on his show "Equals Three". He's a very good presenter of the show, but I've found his group to be lacking in quality. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for people aspiring to go into different fields, try different things and if you have the time, money and know the right people to do it, go for it. I'm not a big fan of YFM though.

But... I do LOVE this track. I love "We Like Them Girls", it's a very funny track, the video is not bad either, and it just sounds so good. The electronic music, RWJ's rapping ain't too bad on this song, but the best thing is the lyrics. The lyrics are just really funny. To be fair, I also love a girl with a functioning vagina.

So, that's a wrap for today. I hope you've enjoyed this list. I shall be doing it every month. I'm sorry I don't post as much as I used to, but I'm in a very good place in my life right now, and just don't feel up to writing as much. I'm sure I'll return to a more frequent schedule in the future. Until next time, take care!
