Mixtape: Best of Industrial Vol. 2

Hey everyone and welcome to another Mixtape! Two in two weeks, they're coming like buses! Over seven years ago I did my first "Best of Industrial" Mixtape. You can find that link here. At the time I was struggling to create that Mixtape, reason being that while I love the genre, there weren't that many bands that I knew and loved beyond the obvious. Choosing around 20 artists of this genre isn't easy, certainly those of good quality. Yet the sound in its pure form is just beautiful. It's hard to put into words.

Anyway, doing this Part 2, seven years later was so much easier. I can't again explain why either. Perhaps my palette has increased for the genre? But it was always there and I've always loved it. As I said it's hard to explain!

Not familiar with the term Industrial? I'll copy and past what I put down in my Volume 1 because I explained it relatively well then.

The roots of Industrial music started in the seventies and with the Industrial Records company, but they weren't really successful, nor was the sound. But it inspired the "Post-Industrial" genre, what we now know as Industrial music. So if you're an Industrial purist, you could say that the list below is not Industrial music, but Post-Industrial music. I will continue to consider this Mixtape and the songs and sound as Industrial music, but let's not be ignorant to the original genre of the seventies. There's so many influences that helped made the genre, and there are so many influences from Industrial music that helped shape music today.

So what have I defined as Industrial below? Well, after the seventies Industrial Records scene, Industrial (or Post-Industrial) roots back to the early eighties. Arguably the first Post-Industrial band was Skinny Puppy, but of course, there were bands that influenced Skinny Puppy to make the sound they made, and there were a few bands around that time that while aren't Industrial as a sole genre, they also helped to the rise. Bands like Killing Joke, Bauhaus, Ministry, KMFDM and Kraftwerk are all bands that in some way, shape or form, helped Industrial music to become what it has been in the eighties, nineties and naughties.

But, and you can argue I'm biased in saying this, but to me, the band that pioneered Industrial music is Nine Inch Nails. A lot of the 1980s Industrial lacked melody, it sounded great but it was repetitive and became almost brainless music. But Nine Inch Nails added melody, added quality vocals and also started using ground breaking electronic metal music to add to the machinery sound that was Industrial music. As I said, I could be biased, as Nine Inch Nails are my favourite band.

Not familiar with my Mixtapes? Here are the rules.

A Mixtape is a playlist of a certain genre, band or era. The list is generally 80 minutes long, the same length of a blank CD, with further recommendations if some of the songs aren't to your taste. Remember kids, downloading is wrong!

This list you'll see below isn't just Industrial music. It's a celebration of the sound, and the sounds that have been influenced by Industrial music. Industrial music has been used in so many genres since the boring machine sound of the eighties, it's used in dance music, techno, alternative rock, indie, metal and most recently, dubstep. You name the genre, chances are Industrial had an assist in there for making the genre what it is today. So there's a lot of bands here that aren't Industrial. But I've selected certain songs by those bands, that have roots from the Industrial genre, and have them showcase how good the sound can be when done perfectly. I have some eighties industrial, nineties industrial, some electronic dance music and some heavy industrial metal.

Enjoy my second homage to Industrial music!
  1. Mr Self Destruct - Nine Inch Nails
  2. Hooker With a Penis - Tool
  3. Death - Skinny Puppy
  4. Flesh is the Law - Genitorturers
  5. Shut Me Up - Mindless Self Indulgence

  18. Sucked In - Jerk
  19. Linchpin - Fear Factory
  20. Get to the Gone - Static-X
  21. Rock and Roll (In a Black Hole) - Rob Zombie
Don't like some of these? Give these five a try...
  1. Zerospace - Kidneythieves

  3. Fukken Uber Death Party - Hanzel und Gretel
  4. Eye - Smashing Pumpkins

So I hope you enjoy this list. As I said, some of these bands are not Industrial, but I hope you understand their inclusion in the list. They have roots from the genre, and like to implement it into their modern sounds.

Until next time, take care!

The Metal Hour Show (20/1/14)

Hey guys. Sorry it's a bit late updating you all about this show. I did upload it five days ago.

This is a special show. Special because it's an "audition" show, as I attempt to get a slot on a Northern Irish radio station. I haven't heard yet whether or not I've been successful.

Even if I'm not successful it's probably the most successful show I've done, reception wise. I've had fantastic feedback from the show, from many different people. I have put a lot of content into it, to showcase my style and to show what I can do. Of course I'm not 100% happy with it, and I can definitely improve, but I'm so happy where I've come, in the past two months, in doing this. Being a radio DJ is a possibility as a career for me, but I have a long long way to go and have to get much better, and get better equipment, if I want this ambition to become a reality.

So yeah, have a listen to The Metal Hour below! Give me feedback, positive, or constructive negative, I thoroughly appreciate it!

The Metal Hour: 20/1/14
Track listing:
Symphony of Destruction - Megadeth
Dead Souls - Nine Inch Nails
Fire it Up - Black Label Society
Orion - Metallica
Bounce - System of a Down
Los - Rammstein
Pro-test - Skinny Puppy
Thieves - Limp Bizkit
Pussy All Night - Mindless Self Indulgence
Get to the Gone - Static-X
Everything Ends - Slipknot
I am the Warlock - Probot (feat. Jack Black)
Total running time: 01:00:00

Mercy Licks - February 2013

Hey there, and welcome to the second edition of my Mercy Links. This section is basically me revealing to you the ten songs I've been listening to the most every month. I did January last month and, while I'm a little late, I bring you February's ten songs now.

So what are the Ten Mercy Licks of February 2013? Let's find out...

#10: "Laid to Rest" - Lamb of God
You'll notice a theme with a lot of the songs in this list. And that theme is Guitar Hero. If it wasn't for Guitar Hero I would have never even thought about liking Lamb of God. I don't really like bands that shout from the bowels of fiery doom much, not when it's pretty much the only thing they do. But Lamb of God are one of the better bands in that bracket. And I do enjoy a couple of songs by the band. "Laid to Rest" is a pretty damn cool track.

#9: "Get to the Gone" - Static-X
I have been playing this a lot recently in general. I was surprised it didn't make last month's list. It's my favourite Static-X song and I have recently really been listening to a lot of Static-X. It's just so awesome, I love everything about it. I prefer it to the singles off the album, being "Cold" and "Black and White". If you like your industrial metal, seriously, give this track a listen.

#8: "Ayo Technology" - 50 Cent feat. Justin Timberlake and Timbaland
I had forgotten all about this track for years until my good friend reminded me. I really don't like 50 Cent. At all. He pisses me off big time and I really don't rate his music. But, naturally, working with Justin Timberlake and Timbaland, two of the better performers in RnB, brings the best out of Fiddy. It's a really catchy track and it's probably the best work 50 Cent will do, at least in my opinion.

#7: "Linchpin" - Fear Factory
I'm not a big Fear Factory fan to be honest. As industrial metal bands go they're not one that inspire me to rock out much. But "Linchpin" is totally badass. I really really like this song, so much that it may actually make the Top 10 in March as well. I have been playing it an incredible amount and to be honest, I'm not tiring of playing it yet. It's just awesome.

#6: "YYZ" - Rush
Here's a medley of Guitar Hero songs I've played a lot through the last month. The first being "YYZ", possibly one of the greatest instrumentals of all time, or at least I think so. I'd never really listened to Rush before I played Guitar Hero, and in honesty, I'm not a fan of the band but "YYZ" is just a piece of musical genius. It's funny as in some ways, it sounds a lot like the basis of Sonic music in the Megadrive era, yet ten years before. Just give it a listen if you haven't before.

#5: "Carry on My Wayward Son" - Kansas
As I said, this is a Guitar Hero medley of songs I've been playing a lot recently, but you could also put in a huge assist to Supernatural for this one. Most people nowadays think of Supernatural when it comes to this song anyways, and I have been watching the series a lot recently. I've always appreciated "Carry on My Wayward Son" because the guitar riff is so awesome, in honesty hair metal isn't my thing and it took me a while to like the rest of the song, but I really do now. It's a cracker of a track and love putting it on.

#4: "Free Bird" - Lynyrd Skynyrd
Man, what a song "Free Bird" is. It's just one of the best classic rock songs of all time. And it has to be played in the full nine minute version, no shortcuts. I recently saw "The Devil's Rejects" and the scene in the film that has "Free Bird" in it is used to perfection. The song just has an attachment to pop culture that will never fade, as far as I'm concerned. And of course, I love playing it on Guitar Hero, it's just great.

#3: "YOLO (feat. Adam Levine and Kendrick Lamar)" - Lonely Island
It's funny that this is the third most played song on this list as I'm actually a little underwhelmed by the new Lonely Island track. This is the first single off the new album coming out soon, their third album, but when you compare this track to the promoting singles off the other two albums, namely "I Just Had Sex" and "Jizz in my Pants", it just doesn't compare in comedy value and music quality. But it's still quite good, and the video is pretty funny too. The best thing about "YOLO" is simply, that it means we're getting a new Lonely Island album which is fantastic news.

#2: "Bangarang (feat. Sirah)" - Skrillex
There were two songs that flew away with the amount of times I played them, and this marginally lost out on the top spot. Bare with me here. You may remember me saying I really don't like dubstep, nor do I really listen to chart music or popular music. But I have been going to clubs a lot more recently and this kept on coming on, and I loved dancing to it. I never knew it was Skrillex, nor what it was called for months. I kept asking my friends but, well, how can you describe a dubstep track in sound without making a lot of "bwa bwa bwub bwub" noises? Exactly. So I finally found this track and I just love it. Fair play to Skrillex, despite me really disliking him, I now like two of his songs. Ah well.

#1: "Back in the Saddle" - Aerosmith
Unlike the other tracks on this list that have appeared in Guitar Hero games, this entry isn't really because of the game. It's actually because of Supernatural. The song came on when I was watching series 6 and I forgot how absolutely badass it is. It's by far my favourite Aerosmith song. "Carry On My Wayward Son" appeared on this list because of Guitar Hero, this appeared beause of Supernatural. But you can say I've definitely had my fill of Guitar Hero and Supernatural this month and that's what makes this list what it is.

So, that's a wrap for today. I hope you've enjoyed this list. Until next time, take care!

Retro Mixtape: Best of Teenage Angst

Hallo peoples, I found this by chance, I doubt it will happen again, if it does it will be a while away because I don't know if I'll be able to post again for a few weeks, we'll see.

Mixtape: Teenage Angst

A Mixtape is a playlist of a certain genre, band or era. The list is generally 80 minutes long, the same length of a blank CD, with further recommendations if some of the songs aren’t to your taste. Remember kids, downloading is wrong! Anyway, this is the best of Teenage Angst, songs that either represent musicians moaning and groaning, or music attracted to teenagers who moan and groan. I haven't got much emo here, because the challenge in my eyes was to choose songs that are actually good, but that have moaning and cursing as well. It's a decent list, let me know what you think.

This Mixtape is now available to listen to fully on YouTube so subscribe to me if you want to listen to it properly.
  1. She Hates Me - Puddle of Mudd
  2. Last Resort – Papa Roach
  3. Creep – Radiohead
  4. Sic Transit Gloria... Glory Fades – Brand New
  5. I Don’t Wanna Be Me – Type O Negative
  6. My Generation – The Who
  7. She’s Attracted To – The Young Knives
  8. Anarchy in the U.K. – The Sex Pistols
  9. Smells Like Teen Spirit – Nirvana
  10. Outtathaway! – The Vines
  11. Chop Suey! – System of a Down
  12. I Hate People Like That – Jerk
  13. Start a War – Static X
  14. Die MF Die – Dope
  15. Down With the Sickness – Disturbed
  16. March of the Pigs – Nine Inch Nails
  17. Duality – Slipknot
  18. Institutionalized – Suicidal Tendencies
  19. I Hate People – Anti-Nowhere League
  20. Break Stuff – Limp Bizkit
  21. Stupid MF – Mindless Self Indulgence
  22. Killing in the Name – Rage Against the Machine
I haven't got a 5 extra songs list because I've lost it unfortuantely. Do you want to suggest me a mixtape theme? Let me know what you're interested in and I'll think about it.
