Mixtape: Best of Non-Single Foo Fighters

Hi everyone, and welcome to another one of my Mixtapes. If you're not sure what a Mixtape is, here's an explanation...

A Mixtape is a playlist of a certain genre, band or era. The list is generally 80 minutes long, the same length of a blank CD, with further recommendations if some of the songs aren't to your taste. Remember kids, downloading is wrong!

As the world has moved on from CDs and we're in a digital age now, I also make the playlist on Spotify and YouTube where possible.

Celebrating 25 years of the Foo Fighters! In case you're wondering, this is a list of what I think are the best Foo Fighters songs - that have never been singles. I'm surprised that some of these songs aren't singles, especially as they are regularly played live or even have music videos in some cases. The final song of the list can be argued that it's Dave Grohl as a solo artist rather than the Foo Fighters as it was around the time when Nirvana broke up, but then, the whole first Foo Fighters album is also technically Dave as a solo artist when you think about it!

Without any further delay, here's the Best of Non-Single Foo Fighters! Next to the tracks are what album each song came out on. Where possible, I've also linked each track on YouTube.
  1. Still (In Your Honor)
  2. Make it Right (Concrete and Gold)
  3. Dear Rosemary (Wasting Light)
  4. See You (The Colour and the Shape)
  5. Stranger Things Have Happened (Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace)
  6. Wattershed (Foo Fighters)
  7. Free Me (In Your Honor)
  8. Disenchanted Lullaby (One by One)
  9. Enough Space (The Colour and the Shape)
  10. Gimme Stitches (There is Nothing Left to Lose)
  11. Subterranean (Sonic Highways)
  12. Band on the Run (Radio 1: Established 1967 Compilation)
  13. La Dee Da (Concrete and Gold)
  14. Weenie Beenie (Foo Fighters)
  15. Erase/Replace (Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace)
  16. The Colour and the Shape (Monkey Wrench B-Side)
  17. I Should Have Known (Wasting Light)
  18. Bad Reputation (Medium Rare EP)
  19. Hooker on the Street (Demo from 1994)
Some of these not to your taste? Here's five alternatives...
  1. Up in Arms (The Colour and the Shape)
  2. The Last Song (In Your Honor)
  3. In the Clear (Sonic Highways)
  4. Aurora (There is Nothing Left to Lose)
  5. Halo (One by One)
To listen to the playlist on Spotify click here! It's missing a couple of tracks unfortunately, but it's mostly there!

To listen to the playlist on YouTube click here!

In case you're interested, I've done a few of these Mixtapes over the years, if you like the following artists, perhaps give them a listen by clicking the links below!

Well I hope you enjoyed this list. I'll be back spontaneously I'm sure with someone else in a few months time! Until next time, take care!

Mixtape: Best of Non-Single Rammstein

Hi everyone, and welcome to another one of my Mixtapes. If you're not sure what a Mixtape is, here's an explanation...

A Mixtape is a playlist of a certain genre, band or era. The list is generally 80 minutes long, the same length of a blank CD, with further recommendations if some of the songs aren't to your taste. Remember kids, downloading is wrong!

As the world has moved on from CDs and we're in a digital age now, I also make the playlist on Spotify and YouTube where possible. In this case, I can only do the Mixtape on Spotify because Rammstein are very protective over their copyrighting on YouTube.

So, just in case you're wondering, this is a list of what I think are Rammstein's best songs - that have never been singles. I'm surprised that some of these songs aren't singles, especially as they are regularly played live or even have music videos in some cases. And yes - this list does include their new album released only two days ago. And again, yes - you REALLY should listen to that new album. It's tremendous.

Without any further delay, here's the Best of Non-Single Rammstein! Next to the tracks are what album each song came out on. Where possible, I've also linked each track on YouTube.
  1. Wollt Ihr Das Bett In Flammen Sehen (Herzeleid)
  2. Zwitter (Mutter)
  3. Reise, Reise (Reise, Reise)
  4. Buck dich (Sehnsucht)
  5. Zerstoren (Rosenrot)
  6. Waidmanns Heil (Liebe Ist Fur Alle Da)
  7. Zeit Dich (Rammstein)
  8. Sehnsucht (Sehnsucht)
  9. Heirate Mich (Herzeleid)
  10. Rein Raus (Mutter)
  11. Sex (Rammstein)
  12. Eifersucht (Sehnsucht)
  13. Te Quiero Puta! (Rosenrot)
  14. Spieluhr (Mutter)
  15. B******** (Liebe Ist Fur Alle Da)
  16. Los (Reise, Reise)
  17. Puppe (Rammstein)
  18. Rammstein (Herzeleid)
Some of these not to your taste? Here's five alternatives...
  1. Weisses Fleisch (Herzeleid)
  2. Dalai Lama (Reise, Reise)
  3. Rammlied (Liebe Ist Fur Alle Da)
  4. Spring (Rosenrot)
  5. Adios (Mutter)

My Top 100 Favourite Songs 2010-14 Edition: #30

#30. "It Get's Worse" – Mindless Self Indulgence
Released: 3/12/13
Album: How I Learned to Stop Giving a Shit and Love Mindless Self Indulgence
The most recent Mindless Self Indulgence album for me was underwhelming. It lacks a lot of the punch that previous albums had, and also felt overall a lot, I dunno, softer perhaps? Compared to their previous stuff. I also felt that they lacked in ideas somewhat.

What we have here in "It Gets Worse" however is pretty much like a "best of MSI" in one track. It has their tasteless, funny and silly lyrics that are going to be misinterpreted by the wrong people, it has their really cool and unique electronic/metal/punk hybrid sound and most importantly it's as catchy as hell.

Mindless Self Indulgence for me last decade were a band that I thought were going places. They honestly sound like no one else on the planet. I don't know if it was complacency, going in the "wrong" direction in targeting emo and post punk teenagers as their nuance audience or just that they're too unique that they just can't get enough mainstream attention. But I was wrong when I predicted them to be one of the bands to look out for in this decade, last decade. That's a shame, because they're still an excellent band and if you've not heard them before, this is definitely a key track to get started with.

Here's the video if you want to hear it!

My Top 100 Favourite Music Videos: #14

#14: "Shut Me Up" - Mindless Self Indulgence
Release Date: 2006
Director: Jhonen Vasquez
Fun Fact: You may recognise the name Jhonen Vasquez; he's the creator of the classic cult animated cartoon series Invader Zim!
This is truly one of my favourite videos of all time. It's one of those videos, and songs, and bands as well, that just don't get the recognition they deserve. Mindless Self Induglence as a band get, for some reason, categorised into the "emo" genre but they're anything but. They're industrial, rap, techno, rap, punk and much more, and they also like to use video game sounds into their music too. If you've not heard them, give them a listen below.

As for the video, it's just insane. Amazingly bizarre but insane at the same time. Basically the story goes that this shop worker goes to see MSI live a few days prior, and then just goes completely insane in the shop. He kills loads of customers in the shop, in a variety of stupidly hilarious ways. It's a very funny video, dramatically over the top, and there are so many "moments" that I love in the video. Seriously, just watch the damn video!

Here is the video for your enjoyment!

The Metal Hour Show (20/1/14)

Hey guys. Sorry it's a bit late updating you all about this show. I did upload it five days ago.

This is a special show. Special because it's an "audition" show, as I attempt to get a slot on a Northern Irish radio station. I haven't heard yet whether or not I've been successful.

Even if I'm not successful it's probably the most successful show I've done, reception wise. I've had fantastic feedback from the show, from many different people. I have put a lot of content into it, to showcase my style and to show what I can do. Of course I'm not 100% happy with it, and I can definitely improve, but I'm so happy where I've come, in the past two months, in doing this. Being a radio DJ is a possibility as a career for me, but I have a long long way to go and have to get much better, and get better equipment, if I want this ambition to become a reality.

So yeah, have a listen to The Metal Hour below! Give me feedback, positive, or constructive negative, I thoroughly appreciate it!

The Metal Hour: 20/1/14
Track listing:
Symphony of Destruction - Megadeth
Dead Souls - Nine Inch Nails
Fire it Up - Black Label Society
Orion - Metallica
Bounce - System of a Down
Los - Rammstein

Thieves - Limp Bizkit
Pussy All Night - Mindless Self Indulgence
Get to the Gone - Static-X
Everything Ends - Slipknot
I am the Warlock - Probot (feat. Jack Black)

2013 Special Show (3/1/14)

Happy New Year. After a two week break from doing any DJ shows I've done another one. This one celebrates the year of 2013 in music. All the music in the show (apart from the intro) are from the year 2013. I also had a record amount of requests for the show. Thanks for all the support.

The next six weeks I'll be revealing, both on this website, and on Mixcloud, the Mercyside 100. It will count down the 100 most played songs on my personal media player from Jan 1st to Dec 31st of 2013. It'll mix all sorts of music, not just rock and metal, because I have quite an ecclectic taste in music. It's a personal journey this time round but if you want to possibly hear new songs, or want to know what I listened to last year, keep following me on this site or on Mixcloud to find out.

Also, if you haven't noticed, I'm doing a listing on this website again. I'm daily, one at a time, revealing my favourite 50 video game villains. click here for the beginning of the listing if you're interested.

Anyway, here's the 2013 special show. Any feedback is appreciated if you listen to the show, the link is below!

Mixtape: Best of Mindless Self Indulgence

Hey there and welcome to another one of my Mixtapes, this time showing you my favourite songs by Mindless Self Indulgence. When I usually do band specific Mixtapes they're usually celebrating them without promoting their singles. The reason why I do this is because their singles are usually their most popular songs, and chances are, you've heard them already. So to try and further show how great that artist is, I delve into their non-singles, pick out my favourite songs, and hope that you love those songs and further enjoy that artist.

This time though I'm including singles. Why? Two reasons. One, Mindless Self Indulgence aren't very popular, unfortunately. I made a call on this site around 18 months ago that MSI would eventually get the recognition they deserve; they're an incredibly underrated band that have a sound and image that is distinctive to the trite that's around metal in general today. I still stand by that statement, I truly think one day they'll get that recognition. Talent like that is hard to come by, and all it will take is one major release to get some fantastic mainstream attention, then they'll get that recognition. Secondly, they haven't released that many singles. They've only released 12 singles, and 6 of those were from their last album. So I thought I'd consider all of their songs, and funnily enough, of those 12 singles only 6 actually make the list anyway.

Don't know much about Mixtapes? Here are the rules.

A Mixtape is a playlist of a certain genre, band or era. The list is generally 80 minutes long, the same length of a blank CD, with further recommendations if some of the songs aren't to your taste. Remember kids, downloading is wrong!

So here we go! Here's a list of my favourite Mindless Self Indulgence songs!
In brackets are the albums each track is taken from.
Also, this Mixtape is now available to listen to fully on YouTube so subscribe to me if you want to listen to it properly. Enjoy!

  2. Money (If)
  3. Kill the Rock (Frankenstein Girls Will Seem Strangely Sexy)

  6. Alienating Our Audience (Despierta Los Niños)
  7. What Do They Know? (You'll Rebel to Anything)
  8. Dickface (Tight)
  9. Faggot (Frankenstein Girls Will Seem Strangely Sexy)
  10. Prom (You'll Rebel to Anything)

  31. Tight (Tight)
Don't like some of these? Give these five a try...

  2. Jx-47 (Tight)
  3. Bullshit (You'll Rebel to Anything)
  4. Issues (If)
  5. Played (Frankenstein Girls Will Seem Strangely Sexy)
If you're wondering why I'm making this list it's to promote one of my favourite bands, a band that I find terribly underrated. But also, because I'm seeing them in around a month's time. I can't wait. Seriously, give this band a listen if you haven't heard them before, they're terribly underrated. That's it from me, have a good day!

The Mercy Side: Metal is Dead

I said a few months ago that I'd be doing an article on dubstep. The idea of that article was that, frankly, I don't like dubstep but I'd try and get into the genre. Why? Why get into a genre you don't like? Well, I feel I should like dubstep but don't. It's a combination of dance music, electronic and in some cases, metal, particularly industrial metal influences. All of these genres when done correctly, interest me. Hell, I just did a Mixtape of my favourite Industrial songs. So while a lot of my friends and large parts of the world are embracing dubstep, I was stuck, as I didn't like the genre. I asked a lot of people on some forums and on my Facebook to put their favourite songs of the genre up so I can try and get into the genre. It kinda failed as I anticipated. I was going to write that article but it just got forgotten about in the end. That was until, I decided I'd review KoRn's new album "The Path of Totality" for this site. Fingers crossed, you'll see that review tomorrow if you're interested.

This article is not just about dubstep though. This article is about a topic that I've been dreading to talk about for some time, but hoped it wouldn't be true. It all stems from this quote that Jonathan Davies, lead singer of KoRn said on the 5th December 2011 to Revolver Magazine:

"You have an open mind. The album is getting people to have an open mind and just accept that this is the future – accept the change."

Now, I only came across this quote this week when it came up on my Facebook (I follow KoRn on Facebook). It pains me to say it, but good old Jonathan Davies is spot on. And if he's saying it, it's got to be at least half right. I mean, I'm not saying that the words of Jonathan Davies are gospel or anything, but the man knows a thing or two about music, metal in particular. The guy is not a pioneer of the genre, but man, KoRn have been consistent in the genre for a good near twenty years. I love KoRn's sound. They're not my favourite band or anything, but I could listen to KoRn any day of the week because they sound fantabulous. I love the raw guitar sound they have, a sound that as far as I'm aware, has rarely been replicated by any other band. What's sad though is that Jonathan Davies has said this now. I'm not bigging up myself or anything, but I sensed this a long time ago. Probably about five years ago.
KoRn. Man, they like dreads don't they?
You see, I remember having a conversation at school with a friend about the future of music. She isn't really into my style of music, she likes her RnB music, her dance music and her pop. She was a dancer after all. I haven't spoken to her in a few years actually. Anyway, we were talking, and "SexyBack" by Justin Timberlake came on the radio while we were talking. I told her that this is the future of music. You see, this was a time where Timbaland was dominating the charts by collaborating with RnB artists but giving them an polished electronic sound. He had also worked closely with Nelly Furtado. This is the Nelly Furtado that sung this piece of cheese six years prior. And what does Timbaland do? He cranks the volume up a little, gives Nelly a harder image, puts some of that electronic polish on her music, and she sounds pretty damn badass, as RnB goes. "Maneater" is the song I'm talking about if you didn't know. Yes I like that song. I liked a lot of the Nelly Furtado songs of this part of her career. She's gone off the rails a little recently but 2006 was her year.

It's electronic sound that Timbaland mastered in this era is a precursor to how music sounds today. Timbaland is a pioneer.  Look around you. On the softer side of music you have this electronic sound everywhere. Everyone's doing it. One of the biggest RnB artists of the moment is Nicki Minaj. What about LMFAO? Black Eyed Peas? This electronic sound is all over the place.

Why am I mentioning this exactly? What has this got to do with dubstep, or hell, metal? Did you listen to "Maneater"? It's a good track. Oh sorry, to answer your question, well... metal has gone in this direction too. My silly prediction in a classroom five years ago has become true. But not in the way I expected. It's happened everywhere. Everyone is including electronic music into their music. Laptop and computer electronic music is bigger now that it ever has been. Dubstep came from this idea, that your computer can make music. And it can. And now look at the genre. It's exploded to the mainstream. But it's also threatening metal as well. I say threatening because this is the genre I grew up to love as a kid, and it's dying. It might already be dead.

I've been asking a lot of people to get me into new metal bands for years without success. Do you want to know the last great metal band I really liked? Do Grinderman count? Grinderman being, Nick Cave and co. forming a new band? Are they even metal? Erm... how about Pendulum? What, they're dance music? Damn... I erm... I don't know actually. Okay let me do some research...
Click on this picture. No seriously.
...okay, after scrawling through Wikipedia, The Murderdolls formed in 2002... Audioslave in 2001... Brand New in 2000... and they're okay but I wouldn't say they're a GREAT band... let me look a little further... aha! The Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster formed in 1999! There we go! Oh wait, I don't know how many of you have heard of them. Besides, are they metal? They're more psychedelic rock and punk... okay, let me go a bit further in case that doesn't justify it... in 1998 Jerk formed but they only did one awesome album... Skindred formed in 1998? Skindred are pretty cool... should we go with them? If I go to 1997 I find Mindless Self Indulgence. Now that's a GREAT metal band.

You see, I have to go 15 years into the past to find the last great metal band. Obviously that's personal taste, I'm sure there are bands formed since then that you or anyone else will like a lot. Not for me though. I love metal, most of my favourite bands are in the genre. Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson, Rammstein, Rob Zombie, to name a few. A lot of these bands were prominent in the nineties but that's not to say that there wasn't great metal to be found in the noughties. If you look at my Top 100 Favourite songs of the decade, you'll see plenty of metal bands and songs in the list. Bands like Drowning Pool, Disturbed, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Avenged Sevenfold and System of a Down.

But then around 2007 time, something changed. What is now known as emo music started to dominate rock and metal. It's a genre that also went mainstream and it was everywhere. I hated emo. I still do. I didn't think it killed off metal or anything, I mean, emo incorporates modern punk and metal after all. But it definitely knocked metal back a peg, and great metal bands were finding it hard to adapt to the change. Some bands did. Slipknot, Papa Roach and Linkin Park come to mind when it comes to bands who changed their sound slightly to appeal to the emo rise. They started including more melody in their songs and less metal. It was more about the whine in the voice, the sentiment in their lyrics. But other bands ceased to exist in some ways, Limp Bizkit come to mind as an example of that.

And now, we have dubstep. We have electronic music fusing with all the genres around us. It got to RnB, you can see proof of that above. It's also gotten to indie music. Bands like MGMT and Foster the People come to mind that like to fuse the sounds together. I mean it's nothing new in a way, Radiohead have been doing it for years. But there's something different this time around, because it's just so much more prominent, so much more... successful. It's become the norm, become the way to make music. And I have very mixed feelings about this.

"You have an open mind. The album is getting people to have an open mind and just accept that this is the future – accept the change."

I just thought I'd put Jonathan Davies' quote back up there as a reminder. Times are changing. Music is changing. It's always changed. I have to be honest, in my lifetime, we've had a lot less change and what has changed has been at a snails pace in comparison to the past. We had jazz and blues, rock 'n' roll, then glam rock, then punk rock, then new wave, then indie. Now we have this electronindie thing going on. In the world of pop we now have artists using electronic music quite a lot. In metal we've used electronic music, but it's always been as a booster, as an enhancement. Look at industrial music as a means of looking how electronic music has been used in metal the most. The best song to suggest is my favourite band of course, Nine Inch Nails with this blistering effort that I put in my Industrial Mixtape last week. From 1:38 onwards is absolutely amazing.
Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails.
But as a general rule, metal hasn't embraced the change. It hasn't accepted electronic music, and dubstep, into its genre. It's been trying to push it away. Metal has suffered as a consequence of this I'd say. As I said, I have mixed feelings about it myself, dubstep as a sound is okay, but it's repetitive and boring. I like electronic music as an enhancement myself, but not when it becomes the source of a song. But KoRn's new album has taken a big bold step forwards for a new way to incorporate metal and electronic music and dubstep. Do I like that album? Well if you read my review you'll find out. But before I review that album I thought that this article was worth writing. I thought it was worth talking about the changes in music at the moment, where electronics and dubstep are becoming more prominent, are becoming the focus.

Someone, I can't remember who, told me that in five or ten years time, the stars of the future will have started making their music on computers in their bedrooms. I think that person is right.

What do you think? Is metal dead? Does metal need to accept the focus on dubstep and electronic music to survive? Disagree? Comment below. Thanks for reading.

Mixtape: Best of Industrial

Note: I've added that second paragraph below when someone corrected me about the term 'Industrial'. I apologise if I offended anyone, hopefully the rectification makes sense.

Hey there and welcome to another one of my Mixtapes. Now, this Mixtape was really hard to compile, that's why it's a day late. Why? Because Industrial music is really hard to tab down. There's so many influences that helped made the genre, and there are so many influences from Industrial music that helped shape music today.

The roots of Industrial music started in the seventies and with the Industrial Records company, but they weren't really successful, nor was the sound. But it inspired the "Post-Industrial" genre, what we now know as Industrial music. So if you're an Industrial purist, you could say that the list below is not Industrial music, but Post-Industrial music. I will continue to consider this Mixtape and the songs and sound as Industrial music, but let's not be ignorant to the original genre of the seventies.

So what have I defined as Industrial below? Well, after the seventies Industrial Records scene, Industrial (or Post-Industrial) roots back to the early eighties. Arguably the first Post-Industrial band was Skinny Puppy, but of course, there were bands that influenced Skinny Puppy to make the sound they made, and there were a few bands around that time that while aren't Industrial as a sole genre, they also helped to the rise. Bands like Killing Joke, Bauhaus, Ministry, KMFDM and Kraftwerk are all bands that in some way, shape or form, helped Industrial music to become what it has been in the eighties, nineties and naughties.

But, and you can argue I'm biased in saying this, but to me, the band that pioneered Industrial music is Nine Inch Nails. A lot of the 1980s Industrial lacked melody, it sounded great but it was repetitive and became almost brainless music. But Nine Inch Nails added melody, added quality vocals and also started using ground breaking electronic metal music to add to the machinery sound that was Industrial music. As I said, I could be biased, as Nine Inch Nails are my favourite band.

Not familiar with my Mixtapes? Here are the rules.

A Mixtape is a playlist of a certain genre, band or era. The list is generally 80 minutes long, the same length of a blank CD, with further recommendations if some of the songs aren't to your taste. Remember kids, downloading is wrong!

This list you'll see below isn't just Industrial music. It's a celebration of the sound, and the sounds that have been influenced by Industrial music. Industrial music has been used in so many genres since the boring machine sound of the eighties, it's used in dance music, techno, alternative rock, indie, metal and most recently, dubstep. You name the genre, chances are Industrial had an assist in there for making the genre what it is today. So there's a lot of bands here that aren't Industrial. But I've selected certain songs by those bands, that have roots from the Industrial genre, and have them showcase how good the sound can be when done perfectly. I have some eighties industrial, nineties industrial, some electronic dance music and some heavy industrial metal. Enjoy my homage to Industrial music.
